There are four possible answers to this problem, if the heater starts normally, runs for a few seconds or minutes and the shuts down but was still running normally at the time of shut down, this could be caused by the photocell, also known as the flame out control. This safety device may be failing, shutting down even though the heater is working normally, check the operation of the photocell. The second cause may be partial fuel filter blockage, the heater is effectively starving itself of fuel, so the flame blows out, hence the puff of smoke, and then shuts down on the safety cut out. Third cause, if this model has a compressor at the rear of the motor, the problem could be low pump pressure, caused by wear or contamination of the carbon blades, this would cause the wrong amount of fuel to be syphoned up, with weak fuel mix the heater may blow itself out and shut down. The fourth cause, perhaps indicated by the puff of white smoke, is contamination of the fuel with water, water will cause the white smoke and also is indecated by white residues or a power like substance on the end plate of the heater which glows red hot when burning.

Runs for about 15 secs and then stops

Let's getdown to basics. You have already done the most basic, and time saving task- that being setting and monitoring the pump pressure. What youmust troubleshoot:
  • is the problem fuel related? or
  • is the problem electronics related?
To find outyou must eliminate all fuel related possibilities because there is not much wayto successfully troubleshoot the electronics without access to DESA'sdiagnostic tool- HA1170.Keep inmind that the ignitor only stays red for 5 seconds- just long enough to startthe flame- the flame must perpetuate itself. If at ANYTIME there is a momentaryflameout condition (or off-color flame condition) the heater will shut down. The photocell's job is to monitor the flame condition. If the photocell doesnot see a flame that it likes, then it will shut the heater down.If thisheater was in my shop and the customer described the problem, the first thingthat I would do would be
  1. check the pump pressure- this is ALWAYS the first step.
  2. shine a flash light into the fuel tank- inspect for water droplets in the tank
  3. check for possibilities if a restricted fuel filter
  4. check for possibilities if a restricted nozzle
  5. with soapy water check for air leaks from the pump - all the way to the nozzle.
  6. If all of these check out then remove the top cover. If the heater runs fine with the top removed- replace the nozzle. Desa recommended annual replacement.
  7. The motor has an internal heat sensor. If the temp on the motor exceeds the safe level the sensor will shut the unit down. There is usually a pattern. The heater will run for an extended time, shut down, re-start, but the runtime is short. Let the unit cool and the pattern repeats itself. Feel the motor after shutdown. It should only be warm to touch. If hot, remove motor and bench test.. 2 possible causes- broken or grungy rotor or internal problems in the motor.
Troubleshooting tipsIf theproblem persists, then replace the control board & photocell.

Need your model # to check the codes but, this coming back on after turning the t-stat off is rare. You may have been in a lockout and the furnace re-started. Some furnaces try to start three times , then lock out. Time out, then re-start. The codes should be on your furnace blower door. Write back with this info and i could help.

Steve, from what you have described. it sound like the Thermoplie and/or Thermocouple have failed. I suspect, it's the Thermocouple. Replacing it, should solve the problem.

I hope this helped you & thanks for choosing FixYa.

My Goodman model GMS90703BXA has a problem wherein after a cycle, the ventilator / discharge fan doesn't shut down properly. It stays on after the burner has shut off and after the main fan has shut off. ...

Hello, usually this happens when the pressure switch remains open, this could be due to a blocked flue pipe, water inside the tube between inducer motor and pressure switch, or the switch itself is going bad. Condensation can form and leak back to the pressure switch through the tubing and causing an intermittent problem with the inducer motor running continuously

Goodman GMP075-3 not igniting. Everything cycles as it should but HSI does not glow. Thermostat is set to heat, temp approximately 10 to 15 degrees higher than room temp, blower motor starts, relay clicks...

The flash code is due to the furnace not proving flame 3 times in a row. If you have a multimeter you can ohm the ignitor out to see if it is good. Depending on the type (silicon Nitride or silicon Carbide) you can verify if it is good. A silicon Nitride ignitor looks like a small thin straight bar type will ohm @ 11 - 18 ohms, a carbide ignitor looks kinda like a tuning fork (sorta) will typically ohm @ 40 - 92 ohms. anything outside of those ranges will require a replacement.

My Goodman heater has a problem igniting at times

Hi, I would have to assume your igniter is weak or has a crack in it. Do you see glow from the igniter every time? There is a flame sensor that looks for flame after the gas comes on and it will lockout after three tries, if the flame came on and shut back down every time, it would be problem with that.

Heater Burner ignites but main blower motor will not turn on.

it sound like the blower motor may be seizing up. try spining the blade by hand to see if it feels free or not. the motor could be trying to turn but can then tripping itself out on overload. (most motors have built in safety overloads which will trip during an overcurrant event. aka too many amps.) you may have to replace blower motor

Was running fine, then shut off and smoked like out of fuel.

THERE ARE THREE OR FOUR REASONS FOR THIS. DIRTY FUEL FILTER, FUEL PRESSURE INCORRECT, DIRTY AIR AND LINT FILTER, THE ELECTRIC EYE THAT SEES THE FLAME IS BAD, OR THE CONTROL BOARD IS BAD. THESE ARE MANUFACTURED BY MESA OUT OF BOWLING GREEN, KY AND THEY HAVE A WEBSITE. I GOT MY NEW PARTS AT MY LOCAL RURAL KING STORE.

I believe your heater has a solid state relay to start the motor when the motor gets to speed it is supposed to shut off. It may be stuck in the on position.
