Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console

Open Question

PS2 (slimline) makes buzzing sound with/without disc when reset. When I looked inside I see this sound is caused when the laser is moved into position and continues to slip on the cog. There is no apparent resistance when I manually shift it. Is this potentially a laser problem, where information is not being retrieved from the disc? I cannot see a light on the laser when the interlock buttons were pressed.

SOURCE: Disks wont spin on new laser

Did you remove the anti static solder blob (point) on your new laser with a soldering iron and solder wick prior to installing it? The symptons your explaining indicate that point is still intact, If so you will need to carefully remove it first then reinstall the laser and try again.

SOURCE: PS2 50001/N DRE Two cogs

Hi Leostg,

Turn them both all the way to the lowest setting.  You then have to watch the position of the little hole on the cogs. They have to move in opposite directions.  Move them 4 clicks each in the raise drive direction. Test the Discs.  CD, PS1, DVD, PS2 silver, and PS2 Blue.  Keep raising the cogs equally 4 clicks, and testing until you get all the discs reading. You should be sure that everything is working on your Laser and dsic reading before you do this though.  Use a Magnifying glass and Flashlight to look at your Laser lens real close to see if you have any film or smudges.

Please do not vote until this is repaired, you only have one vote so please dont cheat me out of a solved vote. I have given you a good tip.

SOURCE: Disk wont spin

First of all the new laser lens will not allow your Slim to read NTSC UC games if you have a PAL european Console.

There is no reason the New laser should have not read the disc unless it Came to you damaged. It sounds like you know how to replace a laser.

SOURCE: Slimline PS2 only plays PS1 Games and not PS2

Clean the LAsers Lens with Q-tip lightly dampened with Glass cleaner, then dry the lens. Try it see if that gets it going again.

If not your lasers lens and supporting frame is probably melting down. You will need a new laser.
Click on "repair directory" at the bottom of this screen. Then click on "Video Game consoles" Pick a good repair shop.

SOURCE: ps2 slimline wont stay on red light goes on then off

The problem is most commonly the ac power cord. I have a PS2 slimline and I had a power cord that fit into the slot and was completly similar to the original cord ,but you may need to order a new cord to solve your red light situation.

On switch button turns green and immediatley turns off again. My disc in the beggining stoped spinning eventhough i can here it trying to spin

Can you hear the fan spinning on the inside of the PS2? If the PS2 comes on, loads the disc, then shuts itself off, chances are it is overheating and shuts off to prevent damage. There is a small fan on the inside of the Slim PS2 that keeps it cool.

If you press the reset switch and it goes from red to green and immediately back to red without ever turning on, your motherboard is shot. ESD damage.

Disc wont spin

There are 4 reasons a disc won't spin on the Slim PSP. The most common is a failed laser.

1. Failed laser -- the disc will not spin up to speed, or not spin at all, due to a bad laser. If you close the PS2 with no disc inside, the ps2 will never spin the disc. If you chose the PS2 with a disc inside but a bad laser, it still thinks no disc is inside and will not spin.

2. Lid closed sensors. There are two of them. One on the motherboard and one on the reset switch. These sensors let the PS2 know that the lid is closed. If one or both of these break, the disc will never spin because the PS2 will think the lid is still open.

3. Damaged case. If the case of the PS2 is damaged, the two parts of the lid that are supposed to press the lid-closed sensors will never press them.

Slimline won't play blue disc

That sounds like a lens problem. The PS2 blue discs are read differently than the regular ones, and I am told the blue discs give out more information that the regualr ones, so your system is not able to recieve it. There are basically two solutions..

1). Get a "high quality" lens cleaner disc. The cheap ones can damage your system's lens.

2). Get a can of air that people use to clean out keyboards. You want to make sure you can see the lens and blow the dust off of it. Just blowing air inside the system will not work.

My ps2 slim is leaving rings on my games???????

I think the motor spindle is damaged , as the motor spindle holds the disc up or it could the lens assembly being misaligned which causes the lens to be angled and scratch the disc

i recommend you to look at the site http://www.forums.gamewinners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=513070#Basic%20servicing for servicing if possible (slimline is somewhere at the bottom)

PS2 SLIMLINE

It seems you may need a new laser, as it isn't reading the disc.
!!WARNING: DO NOT TAKE IT APART YOURSELF, AS I HAVE RUINED MY PREVIOUS PS2 THIS WAY. I HAD TO BUY A COMPLETELY NEW ONE AND THROW THE OLD ONE AWAY. WITHOUT A CERTAIN PART IT IS USELESS.!!

PS2 Slim won't spin disks

Not necessarily, just make sure that the laser is not locking up and its actually moving if not then that right there might be the problem. If it is moving then you might need a new laser. If its that the laser is not moving do not touch it instead try moving the ps2 and making sure that you don't hear any clanking noise inside.

Disc read error

just take the disk out for a min and give a good wipe and without spittin, blow inside the umd tray. The laser going bad is a pretty common issue with the drives, spindle motor could be all gunked up with dirt as well and cause that issue also.
or it could just be the laser. can also try and clean the laser lens.

Please.. help me... my ps2 slimine is comepletely ruined..

Since you "smashed" which made things much worse (been there, done that). It was probrably fixable but now that it scratches I can only assume that the lens (laser) is scratched and damaged "beyond repair". The only suggestion I have, if you really want to fix it is to replace the lens and probrably the disc tray too. Fot the trouble it's worth too fix and the fact that there is no guarantee that it will even work after you fix it, your best bet is too buy a new one or at least a refurbished one.

Game not working

okay, maybe the game is not compatible with the ps2, for eg if ur in europe they make the ps2's PAL compatible, if you're in USA they make em NTSC. other probs might be that clicking noise, doesnt sound too promising!! i dunno but dont get angry and smash the ps2 on the top, that wont help at all!! (like i did ^^)
