I just moved into a rental house with a Rinnai Energy Saver 551FT. I have never used a gas heater before - but this one looked pretty straight forward - slide the thermostat thing to the temp I want to maintain the space at and push on.
However - it turns itself off again after ten to 20 minutes, no matter where I set the temp, and it stays off. I have to push off and on again to turn back on.
At the bottom right corner of the front there is a little door inside of which it says water level - am I supposed to put water in somehow?
I couldnt find the manual online, and the real estate agents dont know.
As i dont know anything about gas heaters (I just moved to a place cold enough to need them) I dont want to experiment without information!
-   When I switch the heater on , it ignites & the red light goes on - several seconds later the air comes out but within seconds the heater switches off.-   pruiz318

-   I have this kind of heater too and am in a similar situation.. Unhelpful agent and no instruction manual. I downloaded the manual that was suggested and it helped.. My problem is that the burner light never comes on and the heater always just turns itself off before even lighting. I think i'll have to call for a service unless anyone else has a suggestion.

-   I have exactly the same problem, with the same model, but sometimes even turning on and off again doesn't work. Also in a rental with equally unhelpful agents.... Not sure where the fiter is though? Can't see anywhere logical on this model. some further advice would be great!

Try vacuum cleaning the filter as the heater shuts down to protect itself from over-temperature. NB-turn off the heater before doing it. And yes, you add water to the tray (...carefully) - this increases the apparent heat. Peter

The thermostat seems off as we have the temperature set at 60 degrees and, although the room temperature on the heater says 58, we are all moving around in short sleeves so it must be in at least the 70s! Is there a way to adjust the thermostat?
