My gateway M-6834 apparently has no problems at start up, there's the sound of windos vista and the hard drive light shows "normal" activity. However displays a very (almost unperceptible) image. I can hardly see the desktop screen (just some elements actually), but not the mouse pointer either. Any advice you can share with me about how to pinpoint the problem and its possible solution? Thank you very much in advance guys.
Your display backlight is not working, so even though the display is working you can only see it very dimly. The usual cause is failure of the inverter, a small circuit board inside the display that makes power for the backlight. It's also possible the backlight itself has failed, but the inverter is much more likely. Changing the board is not difficult, it just has a couple of cables that plug in. The bigger problem is usually finding a replacement, and then getting the display open. There are several online sources for replacement inverters, and they usually offer instructions for your particular computer. Use Google or your own favorite search engine to look for "<insert computer model here> inverter" and you'll probably find one.

sounds like your system is booting up and running due to the hold power shutdown procedure. you might try replacing the video card or adding one if your video is integrated.
Does the power brick have an LED on it? Is it on. Even if it is it may not be putting out voltage. If the cord gets bent alot it can break inside so it looks normal. If you or some you know has a MultiMeter , have them check the voltage. If you know someone with the same laptop, try theirs. If it works get a new one.
C) Broken connector inside laptop If a known working AC adapter doesnt work there could be a broken connector inside that needs to be resoldered or the power subsystem on the board could be fried.
i'm not sure i can solve this problem--which started for me tonight as well with my lacie d2 quadra 500 gb--but i can share a possible explanation i've found online: apparently, they have lots of problems with their power supplies. see if the power adapter (the black brick) is making a hissing sound, or if there is a ticking sound coming from the drive itself. i have both these sounds. i am hoping all my data is safe and that my i.t dept. will be able to fix it with a new power supply on monday.
This is either an operating system failure or hard drive failure. Start by reloading a fresh operating system (Vista) with your recovery or operating system disc. If you have any problems during or after the install, then it's the hard drive and will need to be replaced.
