Question about Edirol R-09 Digital Voice Recorder

Edirol R-09 won't try to make USB connection to computer

Not only does the computer (an iMac) not recognize the R-09, but the screen on the R-09 doesn't even indicate that it's trying to make a connection.  I've tried using various USB ports, factory reset, making sure it's not on playback or the finder screen, etc.  Any ideas?

    I don't have a pc. I did download the update, but I can't update the recorder unless it's recognized by my computer.

  • fmdolan Jan 30, 2009

    I got a new cable, and it still doesn't work. Someone suggested that the driver disappeared from my hard drive, but I can't find it anywhere to download.

  • fmdolan Jan 30, 2009

    I also tried different sockets, and tried different devices so I know the computer sockets are OK. It used to work on my mac, but I did once have to re-install the system so perhaps I lost the driver then. The question is, where can I download it? I can't find anything on the Edirol site.

  • fmdolan Jan 30, 2009

    I got a new cable, nothing seems loose.

  • fmdolan Jan 30, 2009

    Thanks, but this protocol doesn't work. And I really don't think it can be the recorder itself -- it records and plays back without any problems.

  • fmdolan Jan 30, 2009

    Thanks, perhaps I should just take it in for repair, but what do you think of the suggestion that the computer lacks the proper driver?

  • fmdolan Jan 30, 2009

    The cable is fine, and the connections on the mac and the recorder are fine.

  • fmdolan Jan 30, 2009

    No the cable and connections are fine. Thanks for your suggestions but I think it must be a driver problem. I just wish I knew where to get a driver.

1. The problem is that USB cable is not fully inserted into USB port of the recorder, some of them can get stuck on half way. Try to reinsert it and check the connection
2. Also check the menu settings the USB function might be locked.
Good Luck

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

May I offer an alternative perspective? It is a hardware fault internal to the Edirol R-09. Any USB connections has only 4 wires involved, +5, GND, Data + & Data -. In the same token, USB connector of the R-09 would have only 4 pins and 4 connections inside. Since:

  • the Edirol R-09 does not recognize the USB connection;
  • the computer does not recognize the USB connection;
  • a different cable is use to establish the connection;
  • other USB devices work in the same USB connection.
Which eliminates all other possibilities other than the Edirol R-09 itself.

I am therefore inclined to think that if Edirol R-09 still works except the USB, then it's internal connectors are disconnected or a cold solder issue is the problem. Should this hold true, then solution is re-soldering or replacing the Edirol R-09's USB jack and/or its internal connection/wiring.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

    Agree on seeking tech services or even a buddy who has soldering experience.

    computer lacks the proper driver? even if it were so the the R-09 would show something like what you posted "the screen on the R-09 doesn't even indicate that it's trying to make a connection", whether the computer has the correct driver or not.

Hi!
Try to format the card and it should not contained any other data except audio files.

The CF cards should be reformatted before use, and used only for audio recording. That is because non-audio files stored on the card are not recognised as taking up space on the card. If you reach the capacity of the card, it will stop recording, even though the machine does not recognise the card as being full

    Also see the link for updating the firmware. You can download the firmware, connect the CF card using a card reader and add the firm ware into the card or try to use USB cable (if it works).

If the screen is not indicating that it is trying to connect to the computer and the computer does not recognize the device, then the problem has to be the cord try another usb cord and see if that works.

    Do you have a pc nearby or where you could test it? I personally can't guide you on a mac.

    Plug it into a pc, what happens? is it recognized or do you get a message that the usb device is not recognized or malfunctioned.

    If you get the above messge you most likely have a hardware issue that may require service.

Seems like Polaroid's drivers are having problems with a lot of people. The fixya link below from 2011 recommends just using an audio cable and the Audacity program to transfer the sound from the device.

Does the computer recognize the Olympus DS-30 being connected to it at all? If not, do you happen to have another USB cable that you could try using? Either way, you should try connecting it to a different USB port on your computer, as you might have happened to connect it to one that doesn't work.

DO NOT format the recorder. That will wipe it clean. The computer does not recognize the device. There must be a piece of software needed to allow the computer to recognize it. If you have an old pc forget it. Dont know about macs.

I took the advice of one of your correspondents by connecting my Sony ICD-SX365 recorder to my iMac with a simple audio cable by inserting the output jack in the recorder's slot for headphones and the input jack in the iMac's slot for microphones. I used the freeware program Audacity to import the track onto the computer and Switch to convert the file to mp3.

Zoom h4 Vista recording

Don't know if this is the problem in your case ... but here's what I did:
Note: I have Win XP
Previous to attempting connection between laptop and H4 as an audio interface I updated the H4 firmware to ver2.4 and connected to the laptop successfully as a card reader. From the laptop, I could see files I knew were on the H4 card.
... but when I tried connecting in Audio I/O mode, my laptop didn't know what to make of the H4. There was a USB mass storage driver associated with the H4 - I could see this from the "Device Manager". I "uninstalled" the USB driver associated to that "unknown" USB device. I terminated the audio connection on the H4, then reconnected. !!! It was recognized as "USB Audio Device" in the "Sound, video and game controllers" section of the "Device Manager". Before, it was listed under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" as a generic USB device with a yellow warning highlight indicating there was something wrong.
Hope this helps!

Cradle/USB malfunction?

It is not obvious that the cable should be used one way and if someone plugged the cable in wrong even once(this really doesn't take much pressure), it can damage the Female end of the connection. Make sure the arrows align on the recorder and cable and if it doesn't work it is most likely physical damage.
