Question about Fantom Drives 300 GB Hard Drive

3 Answers

Weird noise Whenever I turn on my external hard drive it makes these weird chirping noises. It beeps twice about every 3 seconds then eventually gives up and shuts itself off. My computer seems to know that the device is there but I can't do anything with it.

These drives are fragile! Idiotic design--perched upright instead of flat. Knock it over once, and it may be history. If you hear squeaking, back up all your unique data on the drive elsewhere, or you may be in for total loss.

The drive may be defective. You might see if the manufacturer has a utility to do diagnostics on it. At least some of these external drives are merely a desktop or laptop drive with appropriate electronics in an external case. You could possibly disassemble the case, remove the drive, set the master/slave jumpers properly and try installing it in a standard computer, & see what kind of results you get there. If the drive is defective, then data recovery would be difficult at best, perhaps only available via a business specializing in such.

Beeping hard drive ?

Beeping or chirping?
Check it in a PC if you can. If its more of a chirp than a beep your HDD inside likely failed.

Hi Jane,
If you are using Windows as an operation system, you can try to install the HDD manually

Click on the Start button
Right click on My Computer
click on properties at the bottom
look for the Hardware tab and click on it
look for the Device Manager button and click
look for Action in the top menu
then scan for new hardware

If this does not work, look on the Device Manager screen and you will see + Disk Drives
click on the + and it will list the drives that it sees
if you see the external HDD uninstall it and reboot

Hope this helps

Connect the 320GB HDD before switching ON the laptop and try to repair using scandisk option to repair the drive. Also use chkdsk /f option in command line mode.

Try the hard drive on another computer to see if it is the external or a laptop interface problem. There are EIDE/SATA to usb adapters that you can connect a hard drive to that the computer will then read as an external hard drive. The problem with external HDDs is the usb interface built into them, these are mounted on controller cards and that is ususally where the failure occurs.

External Hard Drive doesn't work

There is a (laptop-size) hard-drive inside the case, and that hard-drive is failing. As it spins, it generates those noises, like a dying dinosaur. If it still is under warranty, exercise the warranty, and replace it. If the warranty has expired, tough luck.

The drive is indefinately junked, however I would not fully give up as it may still be honoured under warranty. The warranty is great on these drives. As for the information I would not worry too much about any one reading it off thats a lab job. If you don't want to pursue warranty and still want to destroy the data then open the drive(s) up and you will find very conveniently inside a VERY strong magnet which you could run over the platters. The magnet is hard to get out because of its magnetic strength but its located at the pivit point of the head arm.
If this info is handy rate me kindly
