I would do a system restore to before the Windows update. When windows update it creates a restore point. This should fix the issue. Sometimes updates don't install correctly. Usually on second install it will install correctly.

SOURCE: Dell Dimension XPS PC Desktop won't boot

Vista is available in 32 and 64 bit os.
if your system ran xp which was most likely 32 bit. And you have installed a 64 bit version os.
this will be your problem, also Vista requires more system RAM/Memory to run it.
If you get 1 beep at startup, it states the system is ok.
Alternatives are device drivers incompatability.
Check M$ website, regarding vistas minimum system requirements.

How to updates?

Thanks for visiting FixYa!

Microsoft Security Essentials usually boots when you turn your computer on. If it's running, you'll see the program's icon in your taskbar on your PC's desktop. If it's not running, click on, Start > All Programs > Microsoft Security Essentials.

Place your mouse pointer on the program's icon in your taskbar and RIGHT click on it. A menu box should open that reads, Open. Click on the word, Open.

At the top of the program's window you'll see 4 (four) tabs. The second tab should be labeled, Update. Click on it. In the Update window, you'll see an Update button. Click on it. (You'll need Internet access to update the program.)

Once you click on the Update button, the program will update itself.

My web browser starts to load, but then nothing happens. I reinstalled firefox and it worked for a few days. I can access internet if I go directly to windows update.

Clean your computer with antivirus.
Go windows update site and install security essentials if you have a genuine copy of windows.

Toshiba satellite L40 dvd player will not work. have re-installed dvd player and tried updating driver but nothing is happening

Open your Windows Explorer (My Computer) window. Is the DVD/CD icon there? If it's not there, follow these steps:
  1. Click the following link to download the remove upper/lower filters from the windows registry._ (RmvFltrs.exe). Save the file to the Windows Desktop.

    Unzip then,
  2. For Windows XP, double-click the file RmvFltrs.exe on the Windows Desktop to start the installation program.

For Windows Vista, right-click the RmvFltrs.exe file, and choose the "Run as Administrator" option. If a User Account Control dialog box displays the message, "An unidentified program wants access to your computer", click Allow.

  3. Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation.

  4. Restart the Computer.
    It should work.

Internet wont connect

Are you using Vista, XP, Linux?

  1. Check the Device Manager
  2. Click Start
  3. Right click My Computer
  4. Select Manage
  5. Click Device Manager
If you see anything with a yellow question mark then you may need to update the driver for it.

If there is nothing missing a driver then we'll move on.

If you're running Vista I have seen 4-5 cases personally where this occurred for no reason and I could not get it to connect to ANY network.

  1. Click on the wireless icon in the system tray
  2. If it say that you are connected but with limited access
  3. or local access only
  4. or no internet
This is the same problem I had people bring in on their laptops, the only thing that I could do was to reinstall Windows, I tried updating drivers but nothing worked.

But first you should try to update the driver, but you'll probably have to reinstall Windows.
