The Epoch guitars are, simply put, cheap.
Try replacing the pickups.
I would recommend purchasing a real Gibson.

Gibson serial number check

Gibson 1961-1969 Custom SG reissues since 1997
YYRRRM
Y is the production year
RRR(R) indicates the guitar's place in production for that year.
M is the model being reissued
Reissue model codes:
1= SG Custom and Special
2= SG Standard
3= 1963 Firebird 1
4= 1964 Firebird III
5= 1965 Firebird V & VII
8= 1968 Les Paul Custom
So I think 737582 would mean the guitar was the 758th Custom SG Standard built in 1973. See this... http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Support/SerialNumberSearch/Default.aspx

What is the pre out used for

PRE OUT/PWR IN - (1) Effects Loop - Connect PRE OUT to an effects device input, then connect the effects device output to PWR IN. (2) Multiple Amps - Connect the primary unit's PRE OUT to the auxiliary unit's PWR IN. The primary unit is used to control all auxiliary units. (3) Recording or Reinforcement - Connect PRE OUT to sound equipment's input. Both jacks use a TS (Tip-Sleeve) standard type plug for connections. PRE OUT includes onboard tone shaping.

The half-way cord is the clue. Read up on unbalanced and balanced lines and TRS connectors.
One of these requires TRS connections and the signal is being carried on the RING of the TIP-RING-SLEEVE connector. Plugging in half-way the TIP touches the ring pickup contact. The emgs one MAY use TRS type cables and there may be a reason the signal and hot of these are reversed. If I could find schematics on all this equipment I could unravel the exact cause. You could make an adapter with a Stereo 1/4 inch plug and a 1/4 inch jack by wiring it to swap the tip and ring between them to use for connecting to the emgs guitar. ALSO verify you are using the SAME type guitar cable for both.OFTEN a TRS cable will NOT turn on the electronics when plugged into a guitar. Use an unbalanced instrument cable unless you have the XLR type output. Use of an adapter from the XLR type cable into the Boss will usually not work.

I just purchased the UCG102, and connected the output on it to my guitar amp. The result is an extremely loud buzz sound that doesn't allow me to hear anything else. I'm using a lapop, USB from the...

It is happening because you have a ground loop. You need to check the ground on your amp. If it is an old one that does NOT have a three wire cord, you need to have that changed. Failure to do so could also damage the interface. ALL your equipment, computer and guitar am should be powered from the same receptacle. If you have other devices connected to your laptip such as printer, they too MUST connect to the same receptacle or plug strip. Any phone lines should be disconnected from the laptop. Make sure everything has three wire cords. The interface probably sends out line level, so you should use a low gain input of the amp and use very little gain as the interface probably has 20 or more Db output than a guitar.

Low volume on front pickup of Epiphone Les Paul

i have an old sg, and this happened to me too. the repair guy told me that inside the p/u, the windings were broken, resulting in a lower output. go on e-bay, and look up a neck pos. humbucker. there everywhere. or do yourself a favor, and do what i did. i have an epi. flying v, and epi. les paul. on e-bay, i bought gibson 57 classics. i put these in both my guitars, and i now have great sounding guitars. you will not belive the difference. good luck, scott
