Question about Verbatim 500GB USB Desktop 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

External hard drive doesn't respond

Hi, i just bought a Verbatim JH8X10 500GB last week, and this morning when i plugged it into my Mac OSX, it stopped showing up on the desktop or anywhere in my computer, but the light on the hard drive is still on and its obviously running, and when i try to plug it into another PC computer, its been detected but just can't be opened for view, is there something i can do to get it to work? cause i have so much files inside this drive that i need to use, thank you!

I have a Verbatim 640 GB USB hard drive and i have a similar problem. The drive is kind of recognised, it shows up as local disk D but it doesn't recognise the files i have on there already and if i click on the folder icon it tells me the disk is not was working a few days ago and has stopped all of a sudden. I really have to get some of the files back they are irreplaceable

I have a Verbatim 160 Gig USB Hard Drive with the same problem. It worked fine and backed up a system with it, but now it sits there with the blue light blinking but doesn't open. It acts like the plug and play isn't seeing it.

i have a verbatim m7150 external hard drive. everything was working fine, no drops, no power surges, just one morning, switched on as usual and it has changed on "My computer" to a hard drive. When i click properties it says 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free and when i try to open it, it tells me i need to format it - which i can't do cause I have no copies of all my work (6 months worth) on that drive that I can't afford to loose. How do i make it identify it as a removable disk storage again, and/or retrieve my data.

I was able to get my Verbatim drive working by slightly squeezing on the end the chord plugs into. Sounds weird but that is what I did. Also try holding it at different angles while its plugged in. You can feel the hard drive start to operate by the vibration. If it isn't slightly vibrating, it's not working. The blue light is deceptive.

I also have the clicking blue light but my Mac won't register it. Seems from the comments that this problem is basically fatal...

Shut your computer down. Disconnect you external hardrive. Power up your computer again. Power up the Verbatim and then connect to a USB port. You should hear a very quiet 'ping'.

Go to My Computer, and the Verbatim should be showing as one of your drives (probably Drive D). You should be able to open it from there.

Make sure that you have a Desk Top Icon for opening the hardrive, it makes it so much easier. Hope this helps

First let me let out a LMAO to there website. Although the Windows and Mac operating systems are still somewhat different in how they work, the computer you're running OSX on IS a standard "IBM-Clone" or PC and therefore and potential hardware issues are identical regardless of wether it is running Mac or Windows.

The Blue light blinking generally means one of only two things, one the hard drive is active and currently reading or writing files, or two, it has a hardware problem. The fact the light is on usually means you have a good power supply but there are numerous other problems that could cause this.

If you just bought the drive and haven't got any data that is only on this drive, take it back to the store you bought it at and ask to have it replaced as a faulty drive. If you do have any crucial data on the drive already, respond back and I will be happy to offer advice on how to retrieve it.

Verbatim external drive 500mb prevents bootup

Try changing the boot sequence in your CMOS setup, set your Main hard drive(I think it's IDE 0) and the rest is up to you whethere you will set the CD-ROM or the external HDD as the 2nd boot device. Once the computer starts just press DEL(most generic computers but for brand specific check the manual on how to access it) to enter the CMOS Setup.
