RESTART: PRESS F8 AFTER RESTART: CHOOSE: SAFE MOOD: AFTER THAT MAKE SYSTEM RESTORE FOLLOW THIS INSTRUCTION: http://laptop-driver.blogspot.com/2008/09/system-restore.html
IF NOT WORKIN AFTER PRESS F8. RESTART AND PRESS F2, YOU SHOULD ENTER THE BIOS(BLUE SCREEN) THIS IS TO TEST IF F2 WORK MEAN YOU WINDOWS XP/VISTA CORRUPT. YOU NEED TO REPAIR OR FORMAT IT. (IF YOU KNOW HOW TO REPAIR WINDOWS JUST DO IT OTHERWISE IF YOU NOT REALLY WANT TO KNOW JUST FIND SOMEONE WHO COULD DO THAT. JUST SHARING =)

Go to Control Panel - Display - Settings and change the screen resolution to 1028X768.
If you cannot change the screen resolution and the graphics adapter is set to generic VGA then download the Windows 98 graphic driver for your model laptop from the Compaq/HP WEB site and change the screen resolution. Use this link to download the drivers :- http://h18000.www1.hp.com/cpq-country/cpq_support.html
Ok the first step to try is logging into administrator most people never set a password on this account. if this does not work there is free software to remove passwords just let know and I can get the name of what I has used before.
There are Linux password recovery programs on the Internet that allow you to remove the passwords on User accounts.
You can Google search and download the program, you then need to make a boot CD with this program.
ALternately you can purchase a copy of Windows XP or Vista and wipe Windows 2K and install XP or Vista on the laptop.
I think that has to do with the BIOS if it cant boot compeletly. Try pressing the key indicated to enter into SETUP if you cant just try and look for a jumper on the motherboard that is written CMOS it may be a button or something.
