To scan to Rich Text you will need to have a program that can conduct an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) conversion of your scanners output.

HP Deskjet 2544 All-in-One Printer does not come with OCR included. You can install the OCR using the below link:
1) Open below link and save the OCR software to downloads folder:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/ocragent/hpcom_OCR_140_003.exe
2) Run the file after the download is complete.
3) If there's an error "This update does not support any of the HP device......", do not close the message. This is very important. You'll need to extract the OCR software from the temp install folder.
4) Open your temp folder (usually C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp)
5) Open 7z folder
6) Copy folder "ocr_web_pack" to downloads or desktop.
7) Now you can Click OK to close the error message.
8) Open "ocr_web_pack" folder which is copied to desktop and double click the "SETUP.EXE" file.
9) Follow the prompts to install the OCR software.

To Setup the printer on wireless network, follow the steps below
1. Press the SETUP Button printer front panel
2. Scroll to Network - Press OK
3. Scroll to Wireless Setup Wizard - Press Ok
The printer will start searching for wireless router.
Choose the SSID ( Network ) and enter SSID ( network key if setup ) and Press OK
You should get a message as Printer Wireless Setup complete.

Run the HP Printer Software Disk and Choose Add a printer and Choose Wireless Installation and follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup

You are ready to Print and Scan

I suggest you try to reset the printer. remove the cartridges before starting these steps.

1. Press the Power button and the Cancel button at the same time and release them. The display will show 'Enter Special Key Combo'.
2. Now press the Blue(Scan), Green(Color Copy) and Grey(Black Copy) buttons one after the other. The display will show 'Support

The printer prints alignment page; after enter button.
Place the printed page in scanned glass properly.
Press the scan button and wait untill the ON light stops blinking.
Now alignment is completed.

The scanner function is not available when you are connected wireless, you must be connected via USB to your PC for the scanner to function correctly.

I reinstalled the printer software and reconnected the wireless connection and it now works well. I read somewhere that registry cleaner software may remove HP files that are required so this time after the registry cleaner scan, I unchecked any HP entry or printer entry and the scanner is still working, however, only from the pc to the printer, I still cannot scan using the buttons on the printer.

I now have 2 of these and both print ok but can not scan with either, never tried to till now.
I have re- downloaded the driver from HP.com via Internet Explorer (usually use Mozilla Firefox) and i get 2 diff. error messages : network busy (impossible since it is connected via USB) and the 1 at my office connects wirelessly but error message is something to do with software.

Problem: Lexmark cannot retrieve applications list

I have the Lexmark X3550 with the WiFi option board installed (makes it same as the model X4550) and get the “cannot retrieve applications list” message on one of the five computers connected to my router (Linlsys WRT54G V8) and using wireless printing and scanning. Just like everyone else with a similar Lexmark WiFi printer/scanner, I can print wireless, but cannot get the wireless scanner to work on one of my PCs.

The fix, in my case, was to change the Lexmark network name as follows.

1. Launch Lexmark Imaging Studio.
2. Right-Click on “View or change network settings”.
3. Enter a new network name in the first box shown. (This box contained the correct network name for my PC, but another name was needed to make the scanner work. I simply added “-lex” at the end of the current network name.)
4. Right-Click OK. You should return to the Imaging Studio screen.
5. Close the Lexmark Imaging Studio window. (The tray icon should remain at the screen lower right.)
6. On the printer, press the Scan Mode button.
7. On the printer’s display screen, select the Computer Name that you entered for the new network name. Just use the arrow buttons until the exact name is shown.
8. Press the Check button. The display screen should show “Downloading Applications List”. Within about 10 seconds the message should change to “ *Scan to Computer ”. Wireless scanning should now work.
9.. Press the Start Color or Start Black button. “Requesting Scan” will be shown. After a few seconds scanning will start. The process is a bit slow.
10. After a while you may see an empty small Lexmark window onscreen. Later, the Lexmark Imaging Studio will appear onscreen, then change to show many options and features. An image of the scanned item will appear in a Lexmark window. Save and/or edit the image. Another scan can be done by pressing the printer’s Check button again. Be sure the correct computer name is shown on the printer’s display.

That’s it. A new computer name was the solution. Your PC and printer may require a restart (power off) after changing the “computer name”.
