I hate to tell you this but that sounds like the clutch is bad ( a common problem ), It is not very easy to replace but you can buy it at sears ( part number 900252-04 ) for about 55 dollars. I'd have to talk you through the repair.

its most likely not the switch, check the power cord.. check where the cord meets to the vacuum. the cord could be going bad and most likely not a loose wire.

remove base cover by 3 'screws' 1/2 turn anti clockwise and clean well remove fibres replace cover and re try.
