The display is back lit by two 12v fuse (AGC) type lamps. It is possible to replace them your self but there are tricky connector interfaces and plastic plug type fasteners, and the tin cover has to be removed enough to access lamps. Sun light will illuminate the display also to see if it's working. Finding lamps might be a problem, check electronic surplus
