If your talking about making the fuel pump work it goes one of two ways .If you stick it (the fuel pump powered) in some gas if it spays out the top its right. if it blows bubbles it's backwards

Hello;
You may have a break in the wire inside the tank to the fuel pump. I have seen the wires disconnect as the pump is installed.

If the data link is not talking to the computer check your ground at the computer and at the data link connector to see if the computer is even alive ground pin 3 on DLC with the key off then turn key to the run position if it flashes the check engine codes record them, if no engine light, does the engine light come on when you turn the key on then go off? if not, check fuses if not check power for pin on computer, if it has power you have a bad computer. But TEST THE GROUNDS IT IS THE BIGGEST FAILURE For these rigs or any manufacture. check that you have power also at the DLC too. if not you need a digital ohm meter and a subscription to http:///.www.alldatadiy.com and start reading the campaigns on that vechile for computer and trouble tree for dead DLC and computer. I don't have that subscription or I could tell you more where to look, if you need anymore help let me know. Also if the crank sensor could cause it not to run the fuel pump but so can the cam sensor. You need to find out if the computer gets it's pulse for the pump at the computer if it does then you need to test them both. There are three wires a ground a colored power wire and a wire to go to the computer you can test these sensors with a meter to see if there is a pulse to each. sometimes the fuel pump gets it's signal from the coil pack so it's important to have the subscription, you can do a search for each item and test them as needed and has a wiring diagram.

SOURCE: 1995 Jeep Cherokee Country straight 6 cyl 4.0L: I

First of all, the fuel pump is generally located in the fuel tank, not always though. Yours probably is, in did not research it. The fuel electric fuel pump turns on only when the ignition key switch is turned to the start position and then left on. A series of one or two relays along with a pressure monitor in the fuel rail delivery system may or not cycle it on and off depending on design. Enough of that. I suggest that you remove the spark plugs to see if they are oil/heavy cabon deposits.If so, professional attention is reguired. One more thing you could try is replacing the spark plug wires. the may be old/worn out/damage. This would give the engine spark a stronger spark,if worn and also replace the spark plugs.

SOURCE: Steering column diagram needed for 1989 Jeep Cherokee

If you intend to keep the vehicle long term, I would suggest you invest in a Haynes Manual, That is worth its weight in gold, for this and any other project..

Replaced fuel filter but Jeep is still bogging down on pulling hills just as if I bought bad gas. Repair man says its the fuel pump and I need to know location of fuel pump. Can you help or have...

its in the fuel tank.to get to it you have to make sure you have less than 1/4 of fuel in it. then crawl under the jeep from the back head first,when u get to the other end of the tank look up you will see what look like a big ring with wires and 2 fuel lines comeing out of it,thats the fuel pump access.disconnect the lines and wires,turn the ring counter clockwise useing a brass punch or anything that wont spark,and a hammer,then pull out slowly.

Is the fuel pump located inside the tank on a 1989?

dont go replacing everything...thats gonna get expensive real quick...especially that fuel pump. yep...the pump is inside the tank. stand out side your truck,and turn the key over,but not enough to start it. you should haer a whirring sound lasting about 2-3 secs. come from the back of the truck. this is the fuel pump powering up. if you dont hear it...then the pump is bad. if you do hear it, have a friend turn the key while you look at the carb/injectors to see if fuel is spraying thruthem,if it isnt....then you have a clogged fuel filter. BUT...b4 you do any of this...check your fuel pump relay and fuse to make sure they are good. a 10 cent fuse beats a 200 dollar pump any day.
keep me posted!!

96 grand cherokee fuel gauge shows empty but scanner shows 49%

sounds like a bad sending unit in the gas tank. While there you may as well replace the fuel pump too.
