How do you wind the watch

There are no many watches these days that need 'winding. Most are either quartz timing and battery, or they are 'Automatic', which means self winding. There is a weight inside that spins on its axis and winds the watch.

If you COMMENT under my post with make and model, I will tell you.

Watch stopped working

Try winding it by hand. If it will wind manually and works then the problem is the 'winding mechanism' If it won't wind by hand then you need a watchmaker. Find one that is certified if possible, they are the most schooled.

Why is there two places to wind a Seth Thomas Corsair E537-000 clock? Any description on the proper tension for winding?

Two winding arbours are in clocks with chiming, because there are two separategears in one clock and each one is driven by separate mainspring. Description for winding is: Wind each spring as long as you do not feel significant resistance. As soon as you feel the winding goes too hard - stop winding.

Watch is new out of the box. Movement will not start. ???

mcdevito75 here, If your Wittnauer is a Quartz movement, look for a small piece of plastic, just under the crown (winder) remove this piece of plastic carefully and push the crown back down to start your watch, if it's an automatic movement, try to wind with the stem if you feel a resistance then winding will initially start yor watch by winding with 20--30 winds, if you feel no resistance when winding the simply rock your watch back and forth in your hand, you will detect something moveing inside the watch, this is the counter balance winding the watch, rock the watch back and forth for approx. 30 seconds to start an initial wind.

Winding an Etica AU700503

This watch is automatic and should not need winding although some can be wound by hand.

If there is no option to wind it up then gently shake it from side to side (turn it over and you should be able to see the weight rotating and winding up the watch).

It may take some time to fully wind the watch. If the weight does not move the it is faulty and should be returned to the maker.

My wifes recently repaired Rolex loses about an

Is it an automatic self wind or wind up? An automatic watch has a weight that winds the main spring and if you wind it by the crown it will not stop. If its one that you wind by hand then the watch should be wound daily at the same right before bed or when she wakes up. Wind gently until it stops. That costly repair should come with a warranty so if she consistently winds daily and still loses time you need to send it back!

If the watch is an automatic then she can gently hold the watch in her hand and rock it back and forth a good 20 times or so and that will give it a good winding! This is a common issue we see at our watch repair business. Some people do not move enough during the day to keep an automatic movement wound. If thats the case then there is nothing ong with the repair, just make sure it gets a good daily wind! :-)

2. Pull the crown out until you hear a click.
3. Turn the crown to set the time as desired.
4. Push in the crown and screw away from you until it is tight.*

crowbar040, you may have a problem with your mainspring click, which is supposed to keep the spring coiled as it winds. What might be happening is it is sticking and coming undone instead of winding. Or you could have a bad gear in your automatic.
