SOURCE: how to boot from cd if i cant change the boot sequence.

ONE MORE TIME!

GO HERE:
http://web.archive.org/web/20041106044148/qasimtoep.tripod.com/dell/dell.html

Don't be scared of the little ol' 24C02 non-volatile RAM chip that is used to store the passwordsand tags - there's one on EVERY stick of RAM!! (yup - that little ***** 8 pin job)...

PAY ATTENTION HERE: THE INFO AT THE ABOVE MENTIONED SITE IS INCORRECT! THEY ARE SHOWING A PICTURE OF THE CHIP, AND TELLING YOU TO SHORT PIN 3 TO PIN 6.
WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IS TO SHORT PIN 6 (SCL - clear) TO PIN 4 (VSS - ground), AND THEN APPLY POWER FOR 1 SECOND OR LESS. THIS WILL CLEAR THE CHIP, AND YOU'RE GOOD TO GO! - DONE IT MANY TIMES!

FYI: This process does NOT damage the chip in any way! Follow the instructions on obtaining the DELL "DST" CD, and with it, you can re-load the chip with whatever you like!

GOOD LUCK!

I can help, Leave everything to me!!!!

Im asuming its doing what is called, " The windows boot loop" or as we call it at work anyways.

Dels are known for this.

let me guess, it starts up normally, gets to the windows startup but asks you to pick between 4 different start up options like safe mode.

Do you have your original CD that came with it, or at least a windows XP CD?

You will need one.

What you do is,

1st: Bot from CD. Start the machine with the Winxp CD in the drive, hit F12 for boot options, or whatever key function it is. Do this as soon as you turn it on,

2: select " Boot from CD" and press any key when it askes if you want to boot from CD.

3: It will load like your doing a fresh install of windows. Thats alright, its normal and no it wont re-install windows at this point.

4: Once it loads, it will have some options. Press " R" for repair.

It will go out and to the command prompt after about 5 seconds.

5: Once at the command prompt, type in exactly ( CHKDSK C: /P ) Dont include the ( ) . Then press "Enter key "

6: after it runs the disk check, normally about 3 to 5 minutes, It will finish and go back to C:/

Just type ( EXIT ), Enter key, and let it reboot.

you can remove the disk now or later, shouldnt matter, It will go to the options screen like before, but just let it default to the normal startup, or hit enter.

Windows should now load fine and you shouldnt get that message at startup anymore.

WHY THIS HAPPENED?, you may be asking.

For some reason, certain Dell Hardware and software conflict, usually when you have installed some new program, or for just no reason.

Your Boot Up files get corrupt or cleared and windows needs those to start.

What you did was re-installed those windows files.

Now copy and paste into a word document and print it out in case it happens again. Not likley but it could.

This works with any computer experienceing this issue, usually, unless there is something worse going on.

You can help others now that you know how and become a hero, make sure to charge them $10 though for your time:)

Let me know if this doesnt work and we can try something else.

Good Luck.

SOURCE: cant install xp to dell c400 with external cd-rom

This is how I did it, you may or may not have the ability. A basic knowledge of Dos is necessary 1) I used another laptop but you could use an adapter to use the hard drive in a regular computer. 2)boot with a windows 98 boot disk, fdisk it to a fat32 partition, make the hard drive a system boot disk (format /s c:) 3) copy the i386 folder and all its contents from a full or full oem (not branded) disk to the laptop drive, also copy smartdrv and highmem.sys from the floppy (speeds thing up dramatically) and create a config.sys file with device=highmem.sys 4)physically install the hard drive back into the C400, boot to dos run smartdrv.exe, then go to the i386 folder and type winnt.exe (enter) wooo should work. Alienware M14x stuck on windows starting scren, the video card driver seems to have been disabled

Try going in to Safe mode. This loads the basic drivers and if you have a problem with hardware, it will still open up Windows.
Turn on computer and immediately press F8.
Any hardware issues will show up in device manager.

Boot from a cd

Go to your BIOS settings and under boot devices, get the CD/DVD option ENABLED (This may vary slightly with motherboard models, but not too much). You may also change the Boot Priority (i.e, which device is to check first for the boot.ini file) but this is not a mandatory option though.

If you have CD/DVD booting enabled in your BIOS, the next time when you place a LIVE OS CD/DVD (bootable CD/DVD) in your CD/DVD drive and make your computer restarted, you will get a message during the pre-booting phase: "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD". You should now press any key to boot from CD/DVD.

NOTE: The new motherboard models all have CD/DVD booting enabled by default.

Hope this helps, Mrityunjay.

Cant get to f8 screen

LOL, most times those recovery CD's don't work. OK, I've never heard of hitting F8 to get to the System Recovery screen. Normally hitting F8 repeatedly after you hit the power button gets you into SAFE MODE or some other options for booting. I would remove the CD from the cd drive and turn off the computer, then turn it on and immediately hit F8 until you see SAFE MODE. Take the Safe Mode option. Let it boot up. Safe mode will look different than normal windows. The icons will be bigger and the screen darker, but that's normal. Once safe mode is up click Start/Program/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. Run System Restore and select a restore point (date and time) before you started having a problem. Don't worry, system restore does not destroy your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

System Recovery DELETES EVERYTHING and sets your computer back to when it was first purchased. If you must run System Recovery F8 is not the key you should be pressing.

I found the info below by putting "Alienware PC Systems M7700 System Recovery" in a google search. Sounds like you bought yourself a piece of trash.
25. System Restore And Recovery Is Not For Wimps The system restore process for the Alienware Aurora M7700 is definitely not for beginners. For one thing, the process doesn't fire off automatically as promised (at least that's what we read on the label affixed to the recovery CD included with the unit). Instead, system restore involves a complete Windows XP Home reinstall "from scratch." Likewise, the drivers don't reside on the Master CD as described in the documentation. Rather, they're located on the Utility CD. During the driver installation phase, it's irritating to get no progress report on individual drivers, perhaps by way of a simple progress bar. Also irksome, the system reboots automatically after the installation of each individual driver. Finally, those who want to succeed at restoring the M7700 back to full operability better know what a disk partition is and understand that the RAID driver must be installed from a diskette.

Can i boot from usb

Hi,

I'm sorry but the answer is no.

You only have floppy, hard drive and cd-rom options. With some Dell models the USB is seen as a secondary hard drive from within the BIOS so maybe (if your bios supports it) you can change boot order there.

Usually thats not the case so you mainly have to boot from the CD/DVD to install or run a DOS or linux command.

Regards.
