Hi,

Do not upgrade to windows 8, with this computer.

If you wish to use windows 8, please purchase a newer computer.

You will only cause headache for yourself and other people by attempting to run windows 8 on this old computer.

Thank you.

SOURCE: need step by step instruction on how to install

for the BIOS update, you should go to the computer manufacturers website and click on the support link. I included a link to your models BIOS download page below..
    http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2298
    download update and run.
For the memory, here's a link to the type for your model..
    http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=FX6800-01e&pl=Gateway&cat=
to install - pop the cover off the case - look for the memory stick slots - push the two clips away to pop the memory sticks up - then replace with the new sticks and push down with your thumbs until they click in. included an image of a motherboard to help you locate memory slots.dynamic.jpghope it helps.

There is no bios update for this model. there should be no problem installing 64bit windows 7.
The athlon 5200 is a 64bit chip so there is no problem there. If you cant install and you think its bios related then reset the bios by either shorting the rtc pins or remove the battery and refit after 10 mins. make sure you reset the bios back to defaults before you make any changes to it.

    Hi,
Error Code: 0x0000005D: Your CPU is not compatible.
To install Windows 8 Release Preview on your PC, the processor (CPU) must support the following features: Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2. Most CPUs have support for these features, so if you receive this error, it is likely because the NX feature is not enabled on your system.
To resolve this error, follow manufacturer guidelines to enable NX ("No eXecute bit"), or the equivalent XD ("eXecute Disabled") feature, within the BIOS security settings.
If the BIOS setting for the NX support option is not available on your system, you may need to contact the manufacturer for updating the BIOS. Note that some older processors may not contain these features and will be incompatible with Windows 8 Release Preview

These features are a functionality of the Processor used in the Desktop. These features are NOT a feature of the desktop itself and is limited to functionality of the CPU exclusively. Refer to this link for more information regarding NX, PAE and SSE2. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/what-is-pae-nx-sse2

It is STRONGLY recommended you do not mess with these settings in the BIOS unless you REALLY know what you are doing.

99.9% of the time NOONE messes with these settings you should have no reason to do so.

windows 8 is far better than windows 7

To install Windows 8 on your PC, the processor (CPU) must support the following features: Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2. Most CPUs have support for these features, so if you receive this error, it is likely because the NX feature is not enabled on your system. To resolve this error, follow manufacturer guidelines to enable NX ("No eXecute bit"), or the equivalent XD ("eXecute Disabled"), feature within the BIOS settings. This feature is typically found in the Advanced or Security tabs within the BIOS settings, and can be referred to by a variety of names, including but not limited to: • No Execute Memory Protect • Execute Disabled Memory Protection • EDB (Execute Disabled Bit) • EVP (Enhanced Virus Protection) If the BIOS setting for the NX (XD, EDB, or EVP) support option is not available on your system, you may need to contact the manufacturer to update the BIOS. Note that some very old processors may not contain these features and will be incompatible with Windows 8 Release Candidate. A whitepaper has been published with further details about the PAE/NX/SSE2 requirement for Windows 8, error cases and scenarios that customers encounter when machines fail to meet the requirement, and what to do to install Windows 8 on their PC's. You can download the whitepaper at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/hh975398.aspx

Nikon NX is not working with Windows 7 64bit.

Capture NX is not supported on Windows7. You'll have to upgrade to the current version of Capture NX2. If you're already using an older version of NX2, the same applies.
