Question about Computers & Internet

My Chromebook netbook won't connect to my home wifi

I've just bought a Chromebook which connects to the internet via wifi at work and internet cafes but not at my home. My main computer is an iMac and this connects perfectly well. I've been in touch with an Google & they advise that it could well be my security settings. They say they need to be WPA2. Currently it's set at "WPA or WEP". The other options are - "WPA only", "WEP only" or "No security". As I don't really understand all this stuff I'm afraid of changing something and then not being able to get the internet on my iMac either. Is it just a simple case of change my router's security settings to "WPA only"? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

That is weird. Does the Chromebook see the wireless router? I just looked on Google's Chromebook website and it says that the Chromebook works with any security setting. What type of Wifi router do you have at home?
This is the Google page talking about Wifi connection issues.

Thanks for your response, Chad. The Chromebook sees the router, tries to connect to it but is always unsuccessful. I've looked at the link you sent me and it says if your password is more than 24 digits (mine's 26) then it should be changed. So do I just log in to my router & change it just like any other password?

If you are trying to connect through a router then you need to access the routers settings and change the security settings for the wireless.

You need to find out the make and model of the router and go to the makers website to find out how to get in to the settings or look in the router manual if you have it.

You will have to have a Network / Lan cable connected between your laptop and a port on the router.
Usually it just means entering an ip address in to your browser (internet explorer, Firefox ) address bar.
For example: http://192.168.2.1 or the equivalent for your router and press Enter. Then you should be able to change all the settings you need to.

No internet connection over wireless netwok

first of all make sure your wifi is turned on. In the lower right tool bar next to the time & date, click on the wifi, click open network & sharing. Click manage wireless networks. Hilight each and remove until it is completely empty. Restart your computer & you should be fine. If not there is a physical problem with your wifi.

1. have you connected the Netbook physically to the router
2. Is the netbook listed in the router as wireless device ( allowed to connect wirelessly.\
3. if the device allowed to connect via the firewall.
4. Have you read the Netbook manual to connect wireless to a allow connection in your area.
*************************************************************************
1.Log into router. Using either 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 in a browser window that is ( internet Explorer or Firefox)
2. Verify wireless router name( on the computer) >>> ( on/off) ( router status window)
3.Note router name you are connecting to.
4.. Check the laptop/desktop do ipconfig /all to see current IP addresses.
5. Set the laptop up in the router by WEP KEY or MAC address. This set up in the "security tab" in the router. using 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 to access through a browser.
6.Note router name you are connecting to.
7. Move the laptop about 20ft away and try to log on to the internet.
This is for all routers to set up wirelessly.
8. check for firmware update at the manufacturers site for your model router

Everytime i try to connect to the internet it says This webpage is not available

You need to confirm you are actually connected to the internet next. In the Wifi menu that you get to by double clicking the "pc" on the task bar you will see 3 tabs. If the first tab does not have all the IP, sub-net and default gateway filled in with legal numbers then you are not connected. Furthermore if you have an "IP Address:" that starts with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx then you are not connected to the internet.

If your Wifi setup includes a security phrase then under the wireless information tab it will take the following steps: "associating with.....", then "authenticating with...." then "connected to...."

The easiest way to tell if the problem is within a Sylvania Netbook running Win CE 6 is to take it to a McDonalds or other non-secure wifi location and see if it connects.

If it connects there but doesn't connect at "home" then your problem is between the netbook and your home setup not purely a Wifi not working issue.

There is a Wifi driver update available at the www.digitalgadgets.com website as well as the Sylvania Netbook Yahoo group. There are some additional troubleshooting steps at the Yahoo group.

I am trying to connect to my virgin mobile internet via the virgin mobile flash drive, the netbook isn't even picking up that I have the flash drive plugged into the computer.

If this is a Sylvania Netbook running Win CE 6 it is possible that the operating system simply doesn't have a driver for Virgin Mobile cellphone.

The only way I have been able to connect to the internet is via Wifi or a LAN cable plugged into the back. I doubt you will get any other method to work.

Please note the Wifi can be via a Wifi access point on your cellphone, a portable, mobile hotspot that connects via a USB modem or any other functional Wifi access point.
