Question about Dell Dimension 8400 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Dell dimension 8400

Hey, thanks for responding to my question. My computer will start ususally on the first try if I open the case and take off the large aluminum cooling tower over the processor chip and then place it back on..Works almost every time. If I try to start the computer without the cooling tower, it won't start. So it is usually easier to leave the computer on for weeks. do you still think that sounds like the motherboard?

Thanks,

Edward

IT MEANS that the processor is not getting cooled enough, try turning on the comptuer with the side panel open, dont reseat the cooling tower, however also check for the four lights on the back of the tower and post the same,,

I have no display when computer is turned on and

First use the following steps:

Turn off the system and disconnect power cables
Press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds.
Reconnect power cables and try to turn it on.

If it remains same, the next step will be to:
Turn off the system and disconnect power cables
Open the case and re-seat memory modules

If you have more than one modules installed, try to test the system with a single module at a time.

Unable to remove cover from dell dimension 8400 desktop pc

This Dell Support, and the Service Manual for the Dimension 8400,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8400/SM/index.htm

In the Service Manual main menu, left-click on - Opening the Computer Cover

1) Computer off, and unplugged from power. (Always unplug the power cable from the surge protector. Then if the power cable needs to be removed from the computer, do so)

2) Remove all cables to the computer

3) Lay the computer on it's Right side.
(As you face the computer, your right side is the computers Right)

4) There is a Release button on the Top of the computer case, and a Release Button on the Bottom of the computer case.
These are located at the Rear of the computer.

The preferred method of opening the computer case, is to press one release button in at a time, and slightly lift up on the side of the computer case, where that release button is located near.

Then go to the other side of the computer case, press this release button in, and lift up on the computer case.

The computer case opens like a clamshell. The computer case is hinged at the front.

Example:
Computer laying on it's right side. Press the Top release button in, and lift up on the computer cover located near the Top.

Now press the release button on the Bottom. Lift the computer case up.

The computer case opens from the back, towards the front, like opening a car hood.

Monitor blinks on and off.

Try this, open your computer case and look at the monitor connector thing. Is it plugged in correctly? If not, plug it in. If it is, buy a new monitor connector, they are somewhat cheap. You can install it by yourself, all you need is a screwdriver.

Dell Dimension 8400

look at the manual but it's more than likelly the one furthest from the edge of the board. it may tell you in one of the applications, like check you device manager or down load a free copy of Soft Sandra, from their wesite, it will give you all of the spec's for enery component in the case. It sounds like a ram mismatch taker them out and look at the individual sticksyou may have 2x1gig modules and 2x 512 gig modules, that would add up to 4 and fill all of the slots.
