Last week my older Ionic Breeze Quadra had dark soot all over it and the wall it was near. I cleaned the rods and the next day the soot was back. This is an older model that you can't take the plates off and clean inside. Any idea what the problem is or how to clean it out?
Hey, if you read the instuction manual : the DON"Ts section-you will see that candles, scent producing products, cause a lot of soot in these cleaners. If you burn scented candles, or use anythind that generates airborne odors, you will need to clean the system more frequently ( every 2-3 days).
I clean mine every week-no matter what.
One of the postings, talked about a : Monthly cleaning that was performed.
You've guessed it. The thing died-arced out.
So, extra odors kill these filters.

The filter will probably need replacement. Ionic breeze purifier are not being manufactured anymore because of heath concerns. Parts are also not distributed anymore. I suggest replacing the ionic purifier with a different air purifier.
The company went under and doesn't service them anymore. It's possible you could find a local repair place that might be able to do something, but there is no authorized or trained service station, and you can't get parts.
You might be able to pick up spare parts if you scour eBay long enough.
The trouble began in 2003 when Consumer Reports magazine published a report claiming the expensive air cleaners don't clean air. The magazine later claimed its tests showed that Sharper Image's Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifier and four other units also release potentially unhealthy levels of ozone.
Unit seems to need reset...To do this simply, with unit still plugged in, set to off by selecting on button until there are no high, med, or low lights on. unplug unit from wall for about 15 seconds then plug back into wall socket and select your favorite setting high, med. or low. The order in which you perform this task must be as stated above and the unit must be clean and the door and cleaning rod must be in home position. Hope this helps, mines working fine now but took a couple tries to find right order to reset.
hmmmm... maybe it was on fire... Barring that,
One thing to be aware of is how these things work: they don't actually filter the air. Rather, they electrically charge dust/dirt/etc. particles in the air as they pass through. This new charge makes them attracted to walls, floors, objects, etc. So rather than straining or filtering dust from the air (like a more traditional air filter), they make dust more likely to stick to walls, surfaces, etc. so that you can then wipe them up.
If there is something in the room that is manufacturing air pollutants, it could cause the problem you're having. The most likely culprit is anything that makes smoke. For example: smoking (duh), or burning CANDLES (especially scented candles) or INCENSE.
Have you cleaned the bars lately? I believe that red light means that the bars that collect the junk from the air are at capacity and needed to be wiped down.
If you don't know how to do this, pull them out from the top after having turned the machine off. Get a rag or paper town moist, but not dripping and just wipe the black soot off all visible sides of the metal bars. Lay it aside when done over night for it to dry completely, then re-insert them into the machine. Turn on and hopefully that should take care of it!
I had a problem with my Ionic Breeze Quadra. Green light would only blink for a second then the red light stayed on. I cleaned unit very good but problem came right back. I blew out the breeze with an air compressor. Not much came out, but now I am green and back in action. I used about 75 psi to clean out.
