Gateway laptop mouse jumps

When I use the built in mouse, it jumps to another area and I can't control.

Could be mouse pad, drivers or spyware. Try usb mouse and see if it works okay.

My cursor on my computer jumps all over the page


You mouse is defective. If using a separate mouse (not the built-in laptop mouse), try changing the batteries and cleaning around the mouse light or ball. Also, try a different mouse. Check to make sure you have not unintentionally changed the mouse control settings.

run it in battery to see if fixes cursor problem
also try a different mouse see if that makes the cursor move correctly
this way you see if its the mouse or power supply
might also a touch pad problem anything that controls the cursor

My cursor jumps all of the page when I'm typing on my Gateway NV76R45u laptop. what am I doing?


I was having a similar issue with my laptop. What I found was while I was typing, my thumbs were close enough to the "Touch Pad" to move the curser. You can decrease the sensitivity or disable the touch pad (which I do when the external mouse is connected) Let me know if this helps.

Hello Allison,
I think you do have a bad ground. when the mouse act eratic, it might be because of a mission ground, that can happen when you take some screws out and you do not put them back. something else you can try is to go to the control panel, click on mouse, and change the pointer speed, that will give you more control, an another quick fix can be done easily by using a USB external mouse. let me know if i can be of further help.

Gateway Laptop with windows 8. Mouse pointer gone and won't come back


See if the mouse pad has been accidentally turned off. This can be done via the "Function" button on your Gateway laptop. To enable your mouse clicker again on your Gateway, head on over to the "Control Menu" in Windows and double-click on the "Control Panel" icon. Click on the "Mouse" option under the "Printers and Other Hardwareicon1.png" tab. In the next menu that pops up, click on the tab listed as "Device Settings." From this menu, you should be able to locate a listing for the mouse pad on your Gateway laptop. Click on this listing. From here, you should be able to enable the mouse again. Click "OK."
  • Head over to the official Gateway site online (see Resources). The above enabling of the mouse device under "Device Settings" may not have worked. Make your way to the "Software and Drivers" area of the site.
  • Check over your Gateway manual and find your specific serial number for your machine. Enter the number into the Gateway site when prompted and check to see if any driver updates exist for your mouse on your machine. If so, click to download the update, and then double-click the file on your computericon1.png to install it. Restart your Gateway laptop to have the changes take place. Your mouse should now work.

    Do you use an external mouse or the built in touchpad/pointing stick? If you use an external mouse try another and see if the random movement disappears.
    If you are using the touchpad/pointing stick for day to day use, plug in a mouse if you have one spare, go to the control panel in whatever version of MS Windows the laptop is running and do the following:Start Button > control panel > mouse (goto the hardware tab on the window that opens) choose the 'synaptics' device > properties > driver > choose 'disable' then ok. This should disable the touchpad if the random jumping stops then it is probably a physical problem with the touchpad/pointing stick, you may want to contact HP and request a repair.

    Since you don't seem to want to help us in helping you, by being more detailed about your mouse, or mouse pad, problem, I will give you some general advice:

    - This is a laptop, yes?
    - It has one of those little areas where you can use your finger, instead of a mouse?
    - Look in Device Manager, or even in the Mouse option in Control Panel, and see if you have a mouse configured for your laptop, in addition to the built-in finger pad for use as a mouse.
    - If you find there are two separate devices, one for the laptop-supplied mouse square, or rectangle, with the buttons on the bottom, for use instead of a mouse, and one for an external mouse, then make sure you have designated the built-in pad for use as a mouse. If, however, you want to use an external mouse, then you do the opposite, and ensure that the external mouse is selected as the device you wish to use for a mouse, and disable the built-in mouse/finger pad software, so that you do not have a conflict.

    One or the other must be primary, and the one not primary must be disabled, or your laptop must be told not to use that other one.

    Apparently - again, because you gave us absolutely no details - there is a hardware conflict and the laptop doesn't know which device to use, so it is not using either, and you're stuck without the benefit of any pointing device.

    All the work you need to do with device manager and control panel must be done with keystrokes, and for that you must use Windows' Help to learn which keys will do what. Usually the four arrow keys, near the numeric pad, along with Page Up and Page Down, and the Tab button, or Shift+Tab, to go backwards, are all you might need to reset things the way they need to be set.

    I hope you understand that absent any details at all, the only advice you will get from anyone here, is going to be educated guesswork.

    yes. its in the control panel under mouse properties. Look for the advanced properties, theres alot of settings you can change there for the touch pad. There might be a link to the program in the start menu too.

    Dell Studio 15 laptop mouse does not work at start up.


    It sounds to me like the mouse buillt into your laptop is conflicting with the Dell external mouse. If you go into control panel and click on mouse, you can disable your built-in mouse. Restart your computer with the USB mouse plugged in and see if that does the trick. I would be surprised if it does not. On the off chance it doesn't work, you will have to enable your built-in mouse and we can check to see if there are any additional conflicts happening through your hardware profiles in the system area of control panel.
