How to install memory stixs

In an Acer Extenza 5420 series of Notebook PC?

Well you came to the right place

Here have a seat, and let me show you;

1) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.

2) Here is a Bottom view of your laptop,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Acer-Extensa-5420-Case-Bottom-15-4-Black-Cover-Speakers-Original-Genuine-Laptop-/170983023419?pt=US_Computer_Cases&hash=item27cf61e33b

Bottom left corner shows the Battery has been removed.
Remove the large panel above it,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Acer-Extensa-5420-5520-Hard-Drive-RAM-Memory-Bottom-Cover-Door-60-4T305-002-/190741766831?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c691862af

Looks to be 6 Philips head screws to remove.
The panel lifts up on the LEFT side. There are TABS extruded from this large panel, which go into the Base Enclosure, (Bottom Cover), on the Right side.

From the Specifications on Acer's Support website,

http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/notebook/0000/Acer/Extensa5420/Extensa5420sp2.shtml

,it states;

System Memory: -> Up to 2GB of DDR2 667MHz memory; upgradeable to 4GB using two SO-DIMM ram memory modules.
(Dual-channel support)

From what I can see, looking at the motherboard by itself; there are TWO ram memory slots,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Acer-Extensa-5120-5420-7120-7420-TravelMate-5220-AMD-Motherboard-MB-TKP01-002-/350455821339?pt=Motherboards&hash=item5198cb741b

Towards the Top you see the White processor socket. Upper corners are cut off, and there is a single screw in the top/middle.
Right above it are two white Ram Memory slots.

EACH ram memory slot will support (Use) 2GB of DDR2 at 667MHz.

2GB = Amount
DDR2 stands for DDR2 Sdram, and is it SO-DIMM to fit in a laptop.
667MHz stands for 667MegaHertz.
The frequency rate ('Speed') that the Ram Memory operates at.

The TOTAL amount of ram memory for the laptop is 4GB.
That means you can use two modules, ('Sticks') of DDR2 Sdram at 667MHz.
Or also stated as PC2-5300.

Just make SURE it is SO-DIMM, or you will be getting the larger DIMM ram memory used in a desktop computer.
An example of SO-DIMM,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1GB_DDR2_SO-DIMM.png

Note the Side Notch on Each side.
The half-moon cutout.
Note the Locating Notch on the Bottom.

Also;
Everywhere on the Ram Memory module, EXCEPT the gold plated contact pins at the Bottom; is the BODY.

The Body is coated with a see-through protective plastic.
Handle the Ram Memory module by the Body.
Refrain from touching the gold plated contact pins.

[WORK on a table. {Or workbench} DO NOT work on a bed, couch, or directly on a carpet floor! High areas of Static electricity.
Static WILL fry out, (Short Circuit) computer hardware components]

If you have two Ram Memory modules, one will be stacked on top of the other one. You remove the top one first, then access the bottom one.

To remove a ram memory module, simply ease the spring clips on either side -> OUT.
Out away from the Ram Memory module.
This action takes the 'Bumps' on the Spring Clips, out of the Side Notches on the Ram Memory module.

DO NOT get carried away. Just ease one spring clip out, then ease the other one out. You can bend the spring clips if you are too rough.
When both spring clip 'bumps' are out of the way, the Ram Memory module will spring up slightly.

Remove AT THAT ANGLE.

Slide the Ram Memory module out, at the same slight angle, (30 degrees?), that it just popped up to.

IF you lift the Ram Memory module straight up, you WILL damage the gold plated contact pins on the bottom of the Ram Memory module; and the contact pins in the Ram Memory slot.

To install a Ram Memory module, look at the location of the Locating Notch on the Bottom.
This aligns with a Locating Lug, in the bottom of the ram memory slot.
ONLY goes in one way.

Locating Notch aligned with Locating Lug, slide the Ram Memory module in, in the SAME slight angle it came out at.
Make sure the gold plated contact pins of the Ram Memory module, are well seated in the ram memory slot.

(Ram Memory module is pushed in tightly, in the Ram Memory slot)
Then press down on the tilted up side, until the spring clips lock in place.

Here is a video demonstrating the above, but NOT your laptop,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbPaR1Ci-Ug

IF, you are ONLY installing ONE Ram Memory module, it MUST go in Slot 1. Also known as DIMM 1.

The Processor (CPU) reads what is in Slot 1 -> F-I-R-S-T.

Know this;
If you are using the regular Windows XP Home, or Pro; it is the 32-bit version.
If it is the Windows XP Pro 64-bit version, it will state so.
Either on the body of the laptop, or go to System Properties.

[Left-click on Start > then Right-click on My Computer.
Left-click on Properties at the bottom of the drop down list ]

Windows Vista 64-bit will state so also.

Point?
IF you have a 32-bit Operating System, your laptop will ONLY recognize about 3.2 to 3.5GB of ram memory; if you have 4GB installed.

Takes a 64-bit Operating System to recognize all 4GB.

joecoolvette

The specifications for the RAM are as follows -
Memory
• Two 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) sockets
• Support for DDR2 533 or DDR2 400 MHz DIMMs
• Support for up to 4 GB of system memory

How to make geforce6100pm-m2 read both memory slots

make sure your memory meets these guide lines.
? 2 x 240-pin DDR2 DIMM socket support up to 16 GB*
? * (Due to the DRAM maximum size is 2GB at present, the memory maximum size we have tested is 4GB)
? Dual-channel DDR2 memory architecture
? Support DDR2 800/667/533/400 DDR2 SDRAM
Due to the operating system limitation, the actual memory size may be less than 4GB for the reservation for system usage under Windows?32-bit OS.
For Windows?64-bit OS with 64-bit CPU, there is no such limitation
which means win xp will only read 2gig and win vist/7 will read 4g so if you have 2x 2gig and only 1 is registering its working fine with win xp.

This is the download page for HMM, (Hardware Maintenance Manual), for the IBM IntelliStation M Pro 6219,

http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-45692

Under the heading > File link, click on > 71p9918.pdf, in blue

[ After you click you won't see anything happening. The PDF file is downloading in the background.
I have Adobe Reader 9.3.4. version, and a medium speed DSL connection. Took 122 seconds before the first page popped up, and the file was fully downloaded also. Longest time it has taken for a PDF file download, in 5 years of downloading. Just wanted to give you a 'Heads Up' ]

In the Bookmarks menu to the left, click on the + sign next to > General Information
Now click on the sub-heading > Features and Specifications

MEMORY
Minimum: 256MB
Maximum: 4GB
Type: PC2100
Connectors: four dual inline memory module (DIMM) connectors

Plain English;

The Minimum Amount of ram memory that can be used is 256MB.
The Maximum Amount of ram memory that can be used is 4GB. (4096MB)

The TYPE is PC2100. That is DDR Sdram at 266MegaHertz. (266MHz)

Crucial CT12864AA800 is DDR2 Sdram at 800MHz!
PC2-6400

Now WHAT is going on here?

DDR Sdram has 184 gold plated contact pins on the bottom. 92 on EACH side. There is one Locating Notch on the bottom.

DDR2 Sdram has 240 gold plated contact pins on the bottom. 120 on EACH side. There is one Locating Notch on the bottom.

Supporting data is 1) the Hardware Maintenance Manual I just gave you a link to.

This is information about the Crucial CT12864AA800 ram memory module,

http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT12864AA800

The contact pins on the bottom of a ram memory module are for Voltage, Signal, Ground, and a host of other attributes.

The orientation of the contact pins in regard to the above mentioned attributes, are in a different place, when comparing DDR Sdram to DDR2 Sdram.
Hence the added number of contact pins in a DDR2 Sdram ram memory module.

More than likely the ram memory module is fried. Can't say about the motherboard, in regard to the ram memory slot, or the Northbridge chip.

[Northbridge and Southbridge chip are the motherboard chipset. The Northbridge chip for the IBM IntelliStation M Pro 6219 is an Intel E7205, the Southbridge chip is an Intel 82801DB,

http://www.intel.com/products/workstation/chipsets/e7205/e7205-overview.htm

Similar to the Intel 875P, (82875P),

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_intel_chipsets#Pentium_4_Chipsets ]

Who recommended this ram memory module? Crucial?

If you are using the XP or Vista OS, if you are going to install more than 3 GB of Memory then it fails to show up on the computer properties.

Once you install the memory then you may check the BIOS for the memory installed in the system, the BIOS shows the exact amount of memory installed in the system.

You system is capable of 4 GB of RAM.
