SOURCE: MAC unable to read this storejet device

The format of your external drive is most likely NTFS which is used by Vista and Windows 7. At best the latest OS X can only read NTFS format with care..

You best bet is to put the data on dvd - r or (i prefer for DVD archiving) + r since you'll be able to port that to anywhere. Alternatively, after saving the data to an interim PC, reformat to FAT. Note FAT can only address 32 GB. so you might need to divide it into multiple partitions.

I hope this helps or you found out differently.

Well, the lamp indicates that the device is getting electrical power, but that's all it indicates.

If it still has a valid WARRANTY, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If the warranty has expired, then open the case, remove the disk-drive, buy a new "compatible" disk-drive, connect it, and thus "revive" your external storage device.

SOURCE: when I connect my transcend

This could be a couple things since it's an external HDD. Here's what I would try:

  1. Try another port
  2. Try another cable
  3. Remove the drive from the external case and plug it in to the MAC directly if possible. If not possible, get another external case for it (they're not expensive these days)
  4. If you still do not get the drive to come up after that, then you might want to give SpinRite a try. - it costs $89, but it is a tool everyone should have around in my opinion.

Keep in mind that new drives are cheap. a 2 TB hdd will run you about as much as SpinRite. But getting a new drive will NOT recover your data of course. So if that data is important to you, see if you can recover it with SpinRite, the team over at GRC is awesome when it comes to support as well.

I have Transcend 1TB 25 inch StoreJet H2 USB 20 Portable Hard Drive... not long enough, it's broken; there's a sound "clutch - clutch - clutch"... I cries for my valuable data... Why...

Inside the plastic case of the Transcend StoreJet H2 1TB, is a small circuit board, and a laptop size harddrive.

The small circuit board is an Interface Board.
The harddrive plugs into it, or there are cables which come from the Interface Board, and plug into the harddrive.
The other end of the Interface Board has a USB cable attached to it.

Most of the time it is this small circuit board that fails. Very rarely does the harddrive fail.
(Unless the external harddrive was dropped)

I would suggest removing the harddrive from the Transcend, and putting it into an inexpensive external enclosure.

Transfer rate is too slow 1 - 2 MBPS write speed read speed is ok in USB 2.0. I formatted the drive using storejet and then the wite speed moved up to 15 - 20 MBPS. after copying 2 folders it again dropped...

I got exactly the same problem with my Transcend Storejet 25M2 500GB hard disk. Formatting didn't helpw much and specifically the write speed is very slow, formatting improved the read speed though.
