Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

No Power : Dell Inspiron 6400

The other day I was using this notebook with battery and ac plugged in when the screen went black and is just turned off. I have tried the ac adapter with no battery, battery no ac, and both. All resulting in nothing lights no noises just nothing.

The ac adapter and battery both have power, but none gets to the notebook. After reading it seems that I'm not alone with this issue. Most likely the motherboard is fried, me thinks. Couple of questions:

1) Is this problem inherent to all notebooks, Dell notebooks, or just the 6400?

2) I'll be saving the hdd and possibly the ram, but should I keep it around for spare parts or part it out? and what could I salvage?

Again...both the battery and ac adapter are working. Have tried the battery and adapter in a friends notebook, so they are not the problem. Since the motherboard is about half the cost of a new notebook, I most likely will not replace it. Are Dells junk or just the Inspiron 6400s?

Yes, I have tried the flee test with no result. Did it again just to make sure. The adapter has a light on it so you know its in a live outlet, I guess. When I plug it into the computer the light on the adapter goes out. Almost sounds like a short. But I know the battery works, have used in another unit.

Again with the same problem. I was on the laptop in the middle of a paper when the screen went blank. The next day I tried to turn it on, the lights on the keyboard turned on and off and that was it. It is fully charged, but nothing is happening....

Did you try to do a flee power test on the motherboard. Remove both the AC and Battery and press the power button of laptop for 30 seconds, then connect only the AC and try turning it on. See if it works.

Would you be comfortable doing a teardown of the system. I have a 6400 myself and done it many times so i can guide you. We can check for possible failure modes. and if need a replacement of motherboard, we can do it ourselves, if you are comfortable.

Or you can also refer to for spares and repair services.

The very first thing that u can try is that try with the different ac adaptor and the battery if u have and if it doesnt the same thing then definately u have to replace the motherboard and if the other ac adaptor and the battery works then replace the ac adaptor and the battery but what i suggest u is that u should replace the ac adaptor and the motherboard both at a time and it will be fine and for that u dont have to worry about ur data in the computer cause replacing the motherboard will bot loose ur data.......

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop. Just went to turn it on and you can hear it start but the screen is black. I tried the power cord/battery thing and it didn't work. Also I was reading about a magnet...

Hi cspeer1201,

Black screen is often caused by a defective screen. The easiest way to determine if you have a hardware or software problem is by performing a power drain. Please follow the steps below for additional instructions.

Power Drain:
1. Turn off the computer.

2. Unplug the AC adapter from the power outlet and take out the battery from the system.

3. Now, press the power button for about 15-20 seconds.

4. Put back the battery in and plug the AC adapter.

5. Turn on the system and try observing it.

--> If power drain did not work, you need to consult a repairman to have the LCD connector be replaced.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Ac power jack not seeing power cord inspiron 6400 when I plug in ac - the light does not light to show ac power and because it is dead I can't turn it on.

YOu are having issue with the motherboard. ther might be a short circuit or bad part on the motherboard that might have caused it not to detect the ac adapter and system will not power on. You need to have motherboard replacement.YOu can contact dell for repair options.

Dell inspiron 6400 Battery problem

what i would suggest is to check the bios there may be a new flash download on the dell website, my wife has a inspiron 1525, which is plugged in and says not charging, the battery will not go above 0%, but we have had to send it to dell (still under warranty) faulty motherboard. if the bios is up to date, there could be a hardware issue with the battery or motherboard
