Troubleshooting Ground Fault

Troubleshooting a ground fault circuit interrupt, or GFI, breaker is pretty straightforward. Troubleshooting the circuit itself can be quite time-consuming.
The GFI breaker is designed with a test button incorporated into the breaker itself.
Pushing the test button should trip the breaker.
On GFI-style breakers the neutral wire going into the house's outlets is connected to the breaker's neutral connector, the white neutral that comes out of the breaker is connected to the neutral bus in the panel, isolating the neutral bus from the neutral wire going into the house.
The test button actually shorts the neutral wire feeding the circuit to the neutral bus in the electrical panel creating a ground fault that should trip the breaker.
It is considered a ground fault because the neutral bus in the main electrical panel is actually connected to the ground bus through the panel's metal casing. What to do if the test button isn't tripping the breaker

Push the test button on the GFI breaker.
The breaker should trip.
If the breaker does not trip, then it may be that the breaker has already tripped and just looks like it's on.
The position of the switch may only move slightly from the on position towards the off position when tripped.

Push the switch on the GFI breaker all of the way toward the off position.
It may take some force to get the breaker to reset.
Turn the breaker back to the on position.
When the breaker has been reset properly you should feel some resistance when pushing the switch back on.



3 Push the test button again and the breaker should trip.
If the breaker still doesn't trip then you should test for power at the screw connections inside of the electrical panel.
Remove the screw that holds the dead front covering the breaker's connections.
Remove the dead front cover.

Test for power with your voltmeter set on AC volts on the highest scale.
For a single pole GFI breaker, touch the black lead from the tester to the silver screw on the GFI breaker and touch the red lead from the tester to the brass screw on the GFI breaker.
You should see 110 volts on the tester. If voltage is seen but the test button won't trip the breaker, then the breaker is bad and should be replaced.

Test for power on a two pole breaker by touching the red voltmeter lead to one of screws with a black or red wire connected to it.
Touch the black lead to the other screw with a black or red wire connected to it.
You should read 220 volts or close to it on your voltmeter.
If you read voltage and the test button won't trip, the breaker is bad and needs to be replaced.

What to do if the breaker won't reset and keeps tripping when turned on

Unplug everything that is plugged into any of the outlets on the circuit in question.
Try resetting the breaker again by pushing the switch all the way to the off position and then turning it back to the on position.
If it won't reset and trips when the breaker's switch hits the on position, it could be a bad breaker or a problem in the circuit itself.

Use your straight-tipped screwdriver to loosen the brass connection screw or screws on the GFI breaker.
Pull the black hot wire, or wires, out of the breaker's connectors.
Loosen the silver screw the white wire is connected to and remove it from the GFI breaker.

Push the switch all the way to the off position.
Turn the switch back to the on position.
If the breaker still won't reset, then the problem is the breaker itself and it should be replaced with a new one of the same size, brand and model.
If the breaker resets normally and the test button trips the breaker when pushed, the problem is in the circuit itself and an electrician should be called to find your ground fault.

Reconnect the black wire, or wires, to the brass screws on the GFI breaker.
Reconnect the white wire to the silver screw on the GFI breaker.

Replace the dead front cover into the breaker panel.
Install the screw or screws that hold the dead front in place.

run a jumper wire from brass load on gfi to top screw on switch then the black wire from light to the other screw on switch, white wire from vanity light should be connected to silver load screw on gfi WILL NOT WORK IF NOT GROUNDED PROPERLY if your ground is connected to common (white) in your breaker box this could cause issues also. a sure ground is the plumbing in your house. if you have copper lines you can use a saddle connector to ground the gfi, if these options are not available contact an electrician in your area.

Disconnect both hot leads from the breaker at the box. Using an ohmmeter measure the resistance to ground or the neutral bar in your box. If the resistance is LESS than about 50 K you have excessive leakage current. It is unlikely the motor is the problem. I would check the wiring and switching for the leakage. Now to the second problem: If you switch between speeds while the unit is running, the GFI will LIKELY trip. This is normal as you create a massive transient that the GFI PROBABLY can't handle. There are a couple things to try: One is using a two pole control switch and turn off the pump before "switching gears" ... as an electrical engineer I can't explain this unless you can understand electrical transients AND capacitive coupling between the windings and the case of the motor. I realize you may have a combination speed and on off switch so you MIGHT have to add a switch. Ideally I would want a relay for on/off near the breaker that momentarily disconnected before shifting gears. The next fix possibility involves a trick we use to control transients in electronics. This involves noise control by using a toroid around the pair of hot wires. This MIGHT take several turns through a good sized ferrite toroid with both the hots in the same direction, side by side. This forms what we call a "Bi-Filar" choke. Look that up on Google to understand the principle... it essentially helps balance the currents in the hots and isolates them from ground for transients.

if the outlet was wired right and working fine before -- then ' yes ' the GFI has tripped and it could have failed do to the rain. replace the outlet with a new GFI outlet and I would also suggest that since you have the outlet outside that you install it into a outdoor weather proof outlet box.

How to wire a gfci to triple single pole switch


Are you tryng to control this GFI with a three-way switch circuit? Wire it like you would a light but put the gfi where the light fisture would be. Circuit on the side of a three way switch box (the box the switch comes in.).

I have a black and white wire to hook to. leviton has black, blue and white. green also but thats a ground. what do i do with the blue wire? this is a single switch to a gfci then to outside lighting....


The blue wire is the switched hot wire coming from the leviton.
So:
black hot/source to black leviton -- blue leviton to black for light fixture or black "line" on GFI -- all whites connected together.

Make sure you turn off the power at the power panel.
If you are lucky you will find the following in the electrical box behind the light:
  1. A black wire that brings power from the fuse/breaker panel--connected directly to one or two other (black) wires (not to the light).
  2. A white wire from the panel--connected to one or more white wires including one to the light.
  3. A black or white (maybe taped black) wire that comes from the switch and is connected to the light.
  4. A green or bare wire connected to the box and maybe also to the light.
If this is the case then you can run a new cable to a new electrical box in the wall for the GFI. Connect the new black wire to the Line In terminal/black wire of the GFI outlet and to the group of black wires in (1) above. Connect the new white wire to the Neutral terminal/white wire of the GFI outlet and to the group of white wires in (2) above. Connect the new green/bare wire to the Ground terminal/green wire of the GFI outlet and to the original box or ground wire. If there is a Load/Feed through wire on the GFI outlet, tape the end of it and do not use.
If the black and white wires described in (1) and (2) above do not appear in the electrical box at the light then they are probably in the switch box and there will be only one black wire and one white wire that connect to the light on the wall. In that case you will need to run a new cable from the switch box to the new outlet. You will not be able to wire the new outlet from the existing electrical box at the light unless you do it through the switch and it will not be on unless the switch is on.

I installed gfi outlet and I have no power!


turn off circuit, test to make sure its off.
remove the old outlet
black and white wires from breaker attach to line
the wires to the rest of the series attach to load
loop wires to attach in clockwise direction
use electrical tape around outside of outlet to protect terminals.

Pool motor wiring


I assume you mean a gfci recepticle? If this is the case you need to take the black wire from the house and pigtail it to go to both the recepticle (Black / Line) and one line side screw of the switch. The white wire from the house goes directly to the line/white side of the recepticle. Also pigtail the ground to go to the green screw on the recepticle, the green screw on the switch, the green wire from the motor, and the ground screw on whatever box you're using. When you purchase the switch make sure you get a two pole switch rated for at least the amperage of the motor. The red wire from the house and the black wire from the pigtailed black will go to the two line side screws of that switch. The red and black from the motor will go to the two screws on the load side of that switch. Make sure to ground everything properly being so close to water. The cover needs to be sealed securely and I recommend the cover that has the lever to activate the switch as opposed to the little door over the switch handle. Also make sure the two breakers supplying those two circuits have a handle that turns them both off at the same time.
