CALIFONE 1420K turntable wobbles

Just bought a used Califone 1420K on ebay. Everything seemed fine, and after I replaced the needle I played a record and noticed that the turntable wobbles ever so slightly to distort playback.
Does anyone know what I can do to correct this problem? I'd like to keep this record player and fix it if it's not too pricey. Thanks for your help! Marie

    Hi,

It seems that the platter is loose or uneven on the spindle causing all records to play unevenly so the sound gets distorted. When I look at it from the side it's only a very small "wobble".

Mine is doing the same. No solutions yet?

Mine has the same problem(speed fluxuation). It also has a tilt in the platter. To my knowledge this shouldn't cause the wobbling sound in the record.

When you say "wobbles" what exactly to you mean? The turntable does not keep a constant speed, the platter is loose on the spindle, the platter is higher on one side than on the other, or something else? Does it wobble with all records?

If you take the platter off you may find a rubber "idler wheel" that rides on the inside rim of the platter. It may be worn or glazed over and hardened. Might try cleaning with denatured alcohol. If that doesnt work you may need a new idler wheel. West Tech Services is a place that comes to mind that may carry what you need.

Platter not spinning

Some turntables only move when you move the arm to the record. If that doesn't work and you have read the set up instructions correctly, as it's new contact the maker or the place you purchased it from. I'm certain they will help.

Califone 1030AV turntable plays slow

The usual cause is a dirty idler wheel. Clean the tire on the idler using alcohol or rubber cleaner. Make sure everything turns easily and check the height adjustment on the idler wheel. You may have to take the motor apart to clean and oil it (if not spinning freely).

I have an old Califone 1400 all records skip new needle

There's not enough pressure to keep the stylus down in the grooves. Increase the weight (on the end of the arm).

I have a Califone 1620 model economy classroom phonograph in need

Probably a bad relay switch. Open up the turntable. Identify the motor that spins the table. Follow the wires of that motor to, perhaps, some type of little circuit board with a relay. I have a Backley-Cardy 322-487 classroom phonograph which uses a Califone 1620 amp and a BSR turntable. To get the table to spin, you have to move the tone arm. Mine doesn't move and I'm in the process of replacing the faulty relay that is the problem.

Trying to fix an old record player - Califone. It seems to be making a scratchy sound even though I have replaced the needle. It almost sounds like when the two wires from a speaker touch... same...

May be the "winding" on the speaker. If it has got damp at some point(you may not notice any on the casing) the cardboard tube that the coil is wound around swells and "rubs" in the speaker. Thus producing a scratching sound. Try connecting to another speaker, just to test and if it sounds fine then that is what it is.

Adjust pitch on a Califone turntable.

This one is actually fastened from underneath (inside). You need to open the player up and you will see the usual C shaped fastener on a cleat near the motor assembly. Most old direct drive record players have a C pin around the spindle that you can unfasten (pry with a twist) with a screwdriver. Irealize you figured this out yourself, but I'll take the guess work out for someone else... yeah..l you gotta take it apart!
