SOURCE: Coffee is weak / Is pump supposed to kick on and off during brewing or run steady

On percolated (filter) coffee machines:

Check water temp, if water temp is insufficient , most common is scale heating element , faulty element, faulty thermostat.
Check if water is dripping right at the center of the filter, if it is dripping on one side because the orifice is clogged, that can result in weak coffee.
Coffee blend not well distributed on filter basket.

On Espresso machines:

Check water temp, same as filter coffee machines (thermostat element, scale on heating chamber).
Ensure that coffee is filled correctly in the filter cup (fill at level), and well pressed.
Ensure that the coffee mixture that you are using is not too coarse, buy the apposite one for espresso.
Ensure that you are not leaving the machine brewing for a time that is too long, and Italian coffee cup is very small, approximately one regular shot.

On the hob moka pots (espresso, Moka and Bialetti type):

This are the trickiest ones, you need art and practice to get a good espresso with a Moka, but when you learn, the result is better than what you may get with an home electrical espresso maker.
The frame on the hob must be not too strong, and the mixture coarse but well pressed, with water at level tag, or you will get a weak coffee.
On Mokas a good strategy is keeping hob at minimum, and turning up the flame at top when coffee starts coming out.

Note: insufficient pressure and clogged lines on electric machines never give you a weak coffee, exactly the opposite.
Not pressed mixture always gives weak coffee, but too much pressed mixture may give you coffee with bad taste.

My EM100 Espresso Maker will not brew? Water comes out when no portafilter on, but not when filter on for brewing? Help!!

This is a complex problem. 1. remove, check and clean brewhead (round screen above portafilter where water comes out); it can become clogged with gunk. 2. brewhead gasket may be old or damaged, they can be purchased on eBay. 3. brewing basket may have become clogged, I don't know if running cleaner solution through it will help, may have to replace it. 4. Likeliest source of problem is coffee ground too fine and/or tamped down too hard. These are not professional level machines and cannot work with very fine grind or heavy tamping. Try a coarser grind and a light tamp with the larger brew basket. Coffee must be ground with good quality burr grinder for correct consistency. John Saxon/

My machine blinking on steam, the wand does not want t o steam, the espresso does not pour. The knob is turned on stand by , but still some steaming noise comes, but no steam comes from the wand, nor...

When it is blinking on steam it means it is preparing the unit for steam. When the steam light goes solid your unit is ready to make steam.

  • Turn from standby to steam then wait for steam light to go solid.
  • When solid steam wand will begin dribbling then spitting out water, which will then turn to steam.
  • When it begins to steam, turn back to standby. NOTE: you only have 6 seconds before steaming turns off.
  • place steaming wand in jug and turn from standby back to steam.
You will hear pumping noises when you turn off your steam, because it releases the steam and puts the excess water in to the drip tray.
  • make sure your bean hopper is properly locked in to the unit. Grinder won't work if hopper not locked in.
  • Make sure your water filter has been prepped and locked securely in to the reservoir and your reservoir is filled.
  • Use fresh beans.
  • Sounds funny but use good quality water, do not use ordinary tap water. Make sure it is filtered or use bottled water (cooler bottles).
  • Try to grind your beans to a good consistancy.
  • Breville recomends about 10kg tamping pressure, use a set of scales to check the feel.
  • Tamp to about 3-5 mm below rim of grouphead (portafilter). Or the tamp has a guide on the side, that silver side on the tamp is the tamp line. Pretty vauge about that in the book.
If all else fails go to www.breville.com.au and check your model and watch some of the vid clips.

The coffee grind is too fine, or you are tamping too hard, First remove the portafilter and press the brew button if water flows move on if not remove the shower and clean. Now that we have a nice flow of water without the portafilter. Now we will add coffee to the portafilter, and level it out, do not tamp and try to run a coffee, if that works then the Tamp is the problem, if you tamp and still have the problem then the grind is too fine.

The brew unit is not tamping the ground coffe properly.

Give the brew unit a good wash, then lube all the moving parts with food grade grease.
If you are able dismantle the brew unit and wash in warm soapy water, this removes coffee and any old lubricant.

Pump makes strange staccato sound at 1 second intervals. A little coffee dribbles out. Then it just shuts itself off. Seems to be a pressure problem?

Check the grind on the coffee or the packing pressure used to tamp. If it flows great without coffee in the portafilter, then the problem is the grind or tamp. The grind might be too fine that the pump has to use so much pressure that the relief valve open and most of the water goes into the drain tray.

Espresso machine will not make Espresso.

Try this remove the portafilter and press the brew button, if water comes out of head, machine is fine but the grind or the tamping(packing pressue) used on the coffee is not right. If you are grinding the coffee just before using it, try a coarser setting. If you pre grind at the store then try tamping the coffee lighter.

CREME

Hi ensure that the group head has heated up before using I tend to screw the head in and place the porta filter on top of the machine to allow it to heat up (heat the machine up for at least and with regards to the tamping ensure that you tamp firmly and twist at the end to smooth the surface. You could try tampind the cofee in the portafilter before placing it in the group head then after you have placed the porta filter back in give it another quick tamp remembering to twist at the end to help smooth the surface.

Then pull a shot. I get great crema like this. Also ensure the cups are warm.

You can heat the brew head and cups by running hot water through them before using as well this method is called cheating the Silvia

Everything sounds like its working...but nothing.

It sounds like your filter is clogged.  This can be tricky to unclog, but use the pin that came with the machine.  I have had the most success when I use the pin and try to run H20 (no coffee) through the filter basket.  Sometimes takes several tries, but eventually blows out the clog.
