Re: how to reset the default value for the toshiba sd...
If you want HDMI 'Auto' mode (the factory default), you need a combination of selecting the proper output mode (use the remote's 'Progressive' button to toggle between the four output modes: HDMI, RCA VGA, component video out and s-video. Once you're in HDMI mode (the led's on the front of the box are a dead give-away!), then you can press the front panel 'HDMI Select' button to move through the five available HDMI settings: 480P, 720P, 1080i, 1080P and 'Auto'. You're in 'Auto' mode when all four led's are lit.

Using your remote press the keys in the following order:
2. Down Arrow
3. Right Arrow
4. Down Arrow
5. Down Arrow
7. Up Arrow
9. Left Arrow
10. Ok (After this the screen should be legible)

With most Toshibas, you could un-plug them and leave it for either 10minutes or 30minutes and it would reset. strange, I know. give it a try.
I also found this when working on a similar problem with your player, it may be relevant -you could try pressing the power button and another button.. sorry, I don't have one in front of me to test..
[[power off the player
hit the power button and immediately hold the HDMI select button
the 3 HD indicator lights will cycle and then pushing the HDMI select button will move through the resolutions.]]
Put DVD into player - wait for regional code violation screen to appear. Once this happens press the M (Memory) button on your remote control. Then press 1 for Title 1 and press play on the remote. This will over-ride the regional code violation detection menu and you can watch the movie etc by entering the fwd on the remote control and change chapters etc by using the T (Title/Chapter) button on the remote control) I found this for other Toshiba SD dvd players, yours was not listed but might be worth a go.
