Question about JVC HD-56G787 Television

1 Answer

Dark Picture I purchased jvc hd-52g787 09/07. The pic began to become dark in 11/08, so I purchased a replacement lamp and installed it. The pic was better, but the brightness was not right. Because the new lamp was under warrantee, I returned it, received a replacement, installed it and the same results. The picture is great but still very dark. Using the onscreen menu, if I turn the brightness up the pic loses the crisp look. Its like it has a dingy look. Almost OLD LIKE quality. I thought that the mirror or projector may just need to be cleaned. I cannot seem to get the screen off to clean the inside. I dont want to damage the screen by forcing it with possible damage. The inside does look to be needing a good cleaning, especially since we both smoke. Any help? Thanks Don

Sorry Don

Smoking absolutely destroys these TVs. Just like Teeth, the smoke gets inside and permenantly yellows the Light Prism. Since the Light Prism is responsible for passing light in these units, the yellowing dims and yellows the picture. There is NO fix for this.

Cleaning these is dangerous since all the parts have either a UV or Polarizing coating on them.

Again, I am sorry but this is the truth. On the other hand, try pressing the "Video" Button to see if one of these settings is any improvement

The set does use a lamp for a light source and average life is 2 years or 2000 hours---many lamps before they actually fail get to be darker.

Dark Screen

The lamps in these normally last about 3000 hours (if your really lucky). The bulb will start to loose it brightness as a matter of due course at about the halfway mark. It maybe that you are running the unit in the non economy mode that they are fading faster then normal.
The sets have a reputation for not being good with lamps though.

Have a look at the lamp though, make sure it has been off for at least an hour to let it properly cool and check for dust that has settled on it. Also if you wipe the lamp, make sure it is with a dry cloth, or allow plenty of time for any moisture to completly dry before turning it on if you use a damp cloth.
