The sensor behind the plastic readout window needs to be exposed to a sufficient amount of light to alter the display brightness from dark room mode to bright room mode (dimmed display, bright display). Be sure sufficient light falls on the digital readout display when desiring the display to be at its bright mode setting.
Your back-lit display light is either burnt out or the fuse is blown. It may be a more serious problem that needs expert attention. i.e. a mechanic There could be a circuit board that controls the back light that has gone bad like I had with an LCD monitor once.
Generally speaking, it comes down to persnonal preference - i.e. what looks good to you, the owner.
However, some techies are of the opinion that extreme (i.e. maximum) settings in your CONTRAST and BRIGHTNESS, can over time, reduce the lifespan of your TV's panel display.
Many of the current TV's on the market, now have built-in ambient light sensors, which allow your set to automatically dim the display, when the sensors detect very low room lighting. This is also an energy saver function on some TV's, which can be manually turned on/off.
You need to give a more detailed description of the problem. The LG 47LH90 is an LED backlit TV with 'local dimming' technology. This means that there are lots of white LEDs behind the screen and these can be controlled in groups to allow localised areas of the screen to be dimmed to produce better contrast between light and dark. It is very likely that when the room is dark, this local dimming is more noticeable. The actual individual LEDs cannot be controlled and so the area that is dimmed will generally be greater than the area that is required to be dark 'blooming effect'. In addition, LED backlit displays only maintain their contrast through a tight viewing angle. If you sit too farto the right or left, then light from non-dimmed LEDs will leak through and the screen will look lighter. In short, there may not be any fault with your TV.

Dynamic Backlight Control - One of the nice features of the Sharp AQUOS LC-32D6U is what Sharp calls OPC, a name they use for their dynamic backlight control. You might also see this feature referred to as a dynamic iris on other LCD HDTVs or disguised under some proprietary name, but fundamentally the principle is the same. Its primary function is to try and maintain a high Full On/Off contrast measures the ratio of the light output of an all white image (full on) and the light output of an all black (full off) image. 2) ANSI contrast is measured with a pattern of 16 alternating black and white rectangles. The average light output from the white rectangles is divided by the average light output of the black rectangles to determine the ANSI contrast ratio. When comparing the contrast ratio of video devices make sure you are comparing the same type of contrast. Full On/Off contrast will always be a larger number than ANSI contrast for the same video device.">contrast ratio under any lighting condition. So when room lights come on or off or the sun enters the room, with OPC enabled, the backlight in the LCD will dim or brighten depending on the amount of light in the room. This is managed by a light sensor located on the front of the unit. When OPC is enabled there can be a slight reduction in the dynamic range of the display as the display attempts to maintain contrast and color saturation as room light changes. We had a chance to compare this feature with another LCD HDTV that was of comparable size but without dynamic backlight control, and the Sharp AQUOS LC-32D6U with OPC enabled was the clear preference.
The display dims automatically to medium or low brightness, as appropriate for low light room conditions. You can adjust the brightness setting of the display for both strong light and lowest light environments, but not for the medium light setting. Turn the system off before setting brightness levels.
