Question about GE 25.0 Cu. Ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator with Thru-the-Door Ice and Water - Black-on-Black

1 Answer

Suddenly our GE side-by-side fridge door doesn't shut

Freezer door is fine, but fridge side no longer swings closed with a push, as it used to. We have to close it deliberately and with some force, and there is a faint grinding nose (like the hinge has sandpaper in it).

Check the bottom of the freezer door at the hinge to see how it is suppose to look and work, assuming the freezer door still works right. Then look at the ref. door and compare.

Sounds like something is broken or damaged. Usually there is a white tefflon washer which is beveled to allow the weight of the door to help it close. Check with an appliance parts store, you may be able to buy just the washer or the whole hinge assembly may come in a package.

My amana bottom freeze refridgerator door in opening a little when the top door is closed. do i need to adjust the screws or is it something with the seal?

raise the front legs so the machine is tilted back a little,this will help the top door close easier,also most likely you have nothing heavy on the door itself,all a fridge does is move air,the evaporator coil gets cold and the evap. fan blows cold air from the freezer into the fridge side and the air keeps circulating,when you shut the top door it's pushing the air down into the freezer and popping the door open,like i said raise the front legs a little and put stuff on the freezer door so it has some wieght to it and it won't pop open.hope this helps salde

from the description given I came up with;
possibly the screws are lose on the top door hinge, the top or bottom hinge is worn, the door is warped or damaged.

Doors don't swing shut automatically

The GE side by side refrigerator has 2 cams on the bottom hinge that helps shut the door. If the cam wears out then the door will not close properly. One of the cams is riveted to the hinge assembly and an extra cam is shipped with it. The cam assemblies can easily be replaced by using the information on the Partselect.com website that refers to the GE TFX22R refrigerator.

Freezer door won't stay shut

Could be the air pressure created from shutting the refer door is popping open the other one. There are are channels between the two so cool air from the freezer gets to the refer compartment. Try this as a test... s l o w l y close the refer door and see if that keeps the other door from popping open. If that works then it's likely an air channel is frozen up somewhere and you may need to turn the unit off for a day or so to let it thaw out. Moisture from leaking door seals, or doors that were left slightly open overnight can be sucked in and freeze up the air channels. I don't know if you are sort of slamming the door shut or not but the doors need to be shut slowly due to how air tight the new refers are.
