Question about Water Heaters
I installed a new Giant 60 gal electric hot water heater. I checked everything; the top element which I changed just in case, the voltage on the tank, the breaker box, the valves are all turned on...still no hot water. Could it be the thermostats? What else could it be?
1) Copy following link for troubleshooting newly installed electric water heater:
2) Push in rest button on upper thermostat.

SOURCE: Top element only working
How they work. First you need to know that cold water goes into the tank near the bottom (because of the "dip tube" inside the tank) and hot water is taken out at the top. Also hot water naturally rises.
so... when the tank is full of cold water the top element will come on and heat up the top 1/3 of the water then the bottom element will come on and finish heating the rest of the tank.
so... set them both at the temperature you want the water to be... about 120^F.

Hello Check the red overtemp reset button at the temp control.Check for contintuity at the elements with a volt meter (pull one wire off first) they should have a reading otherwise they are open & shot.Last is overdrawing (busted pipe) shut off the cold water supply for a 1/2 hour and open it back up and feel the hot water supply pipe.Is it hot?The tank can't keep up with the demand.

SOURCE: I put a new top
The next thing you need to do is find out whether you have 240v to the bottom element....the top will not heat till the bottom is satisfied...
An electric meter is critical when working with these units....trace the power and see where it stops....
here also are some tips that will help you...
