I am trying to teach myself to sew.... what is a serge stitch an how do I set my brother sewing machine to do it?

A serger (overlocker) is not a sewing machine. If you look at the inside seams of a purchased t-shirt, you will usually find a serge stitch that was created using a serger (overlocker). A serger/overlocker usually uses 3 or 4 threads to create that stitch. It also trims the fabric at the same time it finishes the fabric edge. The serge stitch is a chain stitch that, if you pull a particular thread, the entire stitch will come undone.

Your sewing machine is not able to create that same stitch. Your sewing machine may have what is called an "overlock" stitch, but it will use only 2 threads (the top and bobbin) to create that stitch. You would have to consult your owner's manual to see if it can make an overlock stitch.

How do I get a balanced tension with my Elna 624 overlocker?

The best way is to thread with 4 separate colors of thread and then studying the stitch result. With the 4 colors, you can easily tell which thread tension is "off" and whether it should be tightened or loosened. However, a serger is not like a sewing machine where you can set the tension and use that setting for most projects. With a serger, a change in one or a couple of thread tensions will create a totally different stitch.

For most machines, there is a mark at the midway point on each tension control that is the "optimal" tension for a 4-thread overlock. HOWEVER, every machine differs, so these settings may need to be tweaked.

You may want to download the serger workbooks at this site (Bernina), and work through each of the stitches. Make notes in the workbook as to how you have set up your machine to get the best of each stitch. This will be a great reference manual for many years.

Pushing material away, but still overlocking

It is difficult to tell what exactly is happening with your serger.

First thing--make sure you RAISE the presser foot BEFORE you thread any of the threads. This releases the tension disks so the threads will seat properly. You may need to remove all the threads and rethread from the beginning, making sure you thread each in the proper order. Start out with the thread tensions set at the ideal setting--usually the halfway point between the high & low numbers. From there, you will adjust them to even up the thread tensions.

Are you actually trimming off some of the fabric as it is stitching? If so, you might try increasing the cutting width (moves the cutting edge further toward the right) so that there is more fabric caught within the looper threads. It also appears that the looper tensions may be too loose. Try tightening the upper and lower looper tensions so less of the thread loops don't fall off the fabric's raw edge.

Manual for Omega serger 15J134/RC

I've read that the Elna T34 serger is basically the same as your Omega model. If you search online, you will find places that will let you download a manual-for a price.

Sometimes, if you search for and find a corporate phone number, the company will be happy to mail you a copy.

Good luck.

I am new st this but my serger will stitch but the left needle thread will not join the others why ?

It could be that the serger has an independent left needle. Some older sergers were. Built like this so that a single stitching line with an overcasting stitch beside it. This is so that you can stitch a garment with a single stitching line and an overcast edge beside it instead of having to do two operations.

Which needle do I take out to do a rolled needle

left one, rolled hem is usually a narrow seam so you remove the left needle, change the needle plate or flick a switch that changes the position of the thread finger under the foot and tighten up the looper tensions. You want the top looper thread to go around to underneath and the bottom looper thread to disappear against the needle stitching. You also need to close up the stitching density, by decreasing the stitch length.

Hi there, my husqvarna 936 is jamming slightly when i turn the hand wheel and when i use the pedal it works but their is a load catching noise can you help me plz

Hello, The first thing to do with a serger is to change the needles and take the thread off the machine and rethread it. The 936 can sometimes "fight" you a little when it comes to getting the needles up in all the way. It's critical that they are inserted all the way up in the needle clamp. Check to also make sure the N/R lever is in the N position. Check the needle plate, are the "needle like" pins still attached to the plate? If your serger jammed, sometimes the thread breaks the pin supports out of the plate. They are very important when it comes to stitch formation.
