Yes! your right, it's inside of the controller .what you can do is open the controller clean the board by using cotton buds with alcohol or cleaner you will notice accumulated dust preventing the buttons from touching the board you need to remove those.

Controller not detected when contorllers plugged in, asking to insert ps 2 dual shock.

Look at the controller and see if the red light is on in the middle of the controller if it is not press the black rectangle button above the red light. If that dont work then your controller ports on the system might be dirty and need a light cleaning ....or you dont have a ps2 controller you might have a ps1 controller. Hope this helped

Either try unplugging and replugging it in, and resetting the system a few times, try different games with it, or tape it (duct tape).

My PS2 controller port stopped working!

Sounds as if it has been dropped .....or an impact to the controller port while one was plugged in. in some cases the in side of the port can become full of dust and dirt causing light rusting creating a loss of connection ...but an impact can break a small chip on the back of the controller port inside the machine , try cleaning out the controller port and check to make sure the metal tabs are clean and un bent.

Controller problems

Have you gone back and tried that game again? And were you using one (or both) of the two sticks to move in that game, or were you using the directional pad.

The dual shock controllers on the PS2 have a small, easily overlooked button between the two sticks. It has a red light directly above it. If you push that button, the light will switch on and off. When the light is on, you can use the sticks in pressure sensitive mode. For example, if you push the stick a little, your character may walk, but if you push it further in a direction he will run instead. It's used differently in different games. But certain games won't operate unless that feature is either on or off (again, it varies by game).

My guess is that the button was accidentally pressed while you were playing, and suddenly the controller didn't work. But when you switched games, most games will turn the light on when they start up, if they need it, so the problem corrected itself.
