Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model
I can't get the clutch and brake adjusted the way they need to be to operate the tractor. I have never changed the drive belt. Is there some special way to adjust the clutch and brake screws so these things work properly? If I pull back on the clutch when I put it in gear it does work but that is a pain. Can I get a manual on these adjustments? How hard is it to change the drive belt?

The brake is on the right side of the transaxle. There are two mounting bolts and one 1/2 nut in the middle that is your adjustment. Tighten it 1/2 turn at a time and hold the brake down and try to roll it until it holds.

is this perhaps a hydro trans? if so, try putting the shift lever in neutral, then let off the brake pedal, use the shift lever to go forward and to neutral to stop - same with reverse, don't even use the brake pedal except for emergency stops. if it's a manual shift, it's possible the belt is incorrect, and/or the belt guides are bent or the belt is improperly routed - the belt guides are important as they allow the belt to "blossom" off the engine pulley, reducing the "shock" load when engaged - hope this helps

Most local tire shops have or can get tires and tubes of the size you want/need and would install them as well. Without the proper tools, they can be a "bear" to change but if you insist upon doing it yourself, go to a GOOD lawnmower repair shop and have them order the sizes for you. It has been my experience though, the tire shops are cheaper
