I have a docking station for sale for this exact machine - reason for sale is that the machine has developed an intermittent fault so I have replaced it. It is a great docker with 3 USB, 1 printer, 1 monitor,1 network and DC in (takes computer power in). It got me up and running in home office very fast. The model number written on the back is VGP-PRT1. It is about 11 inches in length by 4 inches widt and at max 1 inch in height

Hi there,
you should try plugging from the output port of the laptop to the input port of the docking station, remember the source is coming from your laptop going to the docking station.
Now for the microphone once you have the settings right the line in jack should work properly.
Hope this helps!

We have an Inspirion 6000 with this problem and we've discovered if you pull the power cord out very slightly and lift it upwards, the charging icon appears in the system tray.

my friend has a latitude d600 that has the power port messed up in the back of the computer. i got him this thing, some people call it a docking station some people call it a port replicator, but you dock the computer to it and then you plug your power into the docking station and it charges it that way. you get extra usb ports and stuff like that and there is no repair involved. i dont know if you would want to try something like that maybe.
