Try putting a small drop of kitchen de-greaser (Mr Muscle etc) on your finger and rolling the ball with that finger. Do not pour it on to the device, just a small amount on your finger should cure it.
Works for me every time.

I have heard a LOT about this problem. I don't know if it's the same with a flip, but I also have this problem, just not as bad.
In order for this solution to help you, there's a few questions you need to be able to answer....
Questions: 1) Do you have a media card in your phone? No - I don't know Yes - Next Question
2) Is this your 2nd blackberry with the same media card? No - I don't know Yes - Next Question
3) Did you reformat your media card between devices? Yes - I dont know No - SOLUTION
Solution: You may want to take out your media card and backup any files you want to keep that are on it, do a handset wipe on your phone, and reformat the memory card to this specific device. I have seen this problem a lot, and that seems to be the most popular answer. I personally haven't tried it yet because I have misplaced the disc to my phone, but as soon as I find it, I'm doing it.
