SOURCE: GE Top load washer.
Sounds like a seal or drain hose is leaking or the clamp on a hose has vibrated loose.
Water leaking out the bottom of the machine when washing machine begins agitation cycle. If the machine is turned off the water stops leaking even with the tub full of water.
Let me know if you found it and how you do.

Cold water pipe had become frozen. FYI this model of washer has a nice feature whereas you can test each component i.e. valves, by setting the timer and reading the LED's on the front panel. Instructions are in the schematic.

SOURCE: Broken knob on GE washer
There are four separate parts that make up the knob dial. You can pull off the knob if you use a screwdriver/pliers to remove the clip holding it on. Check if the mounting areas appear stripped or broken. There should also be a compression ring in the mounting hole on the back of the knob. That's what may be broken or stripped. These are all parts that you can get from a local parts store (check the phone book) and you can do it yourself. Any of those parts should cost less than $10. The bad news is if you stripped the pole coming out of the timer assembly. You would need to replace the entire assembly which costs about $130. If you call a GE repairman, you are looking at $89.95 or more just to have them show up. If it is still under warranty, there is no charge. You can call them to verify this:

I queryed another site; justanswer.com with technician Larry, who provided the solution. Replace the door latch assenbly part # WH10X1006 $146.99 from GE. A local parts house had the identical under a Whirlpool # WP8182634 for 59.46. Install the new assemble and all is well.

We have a GE WJRR4170 washer, with the same problem. At first I
thought I might have to unscrew the entire control panel just to
replace the knob. However, replacing it turns out to be easy.
Right behind the knob, holding it in place, is a nylon/plastic retainer clip. If you pull out the knob (into the "start" position), you can use a flathead screwdriver to push the clip out. The knob then will slide easily off the metal stem. A GE replacement knob costs $9 or $10, depending on the source.
Shame on GE, but the knob is designed terribly. The part of it that engages the dial has eight, flimsy plastic teeth. At any time, four of these are supposed to engage four little slots in the dial. However, the way the knob is designed, there will be a lot of wear and tear on these plastic teeth, so they'll wear out on every single machine.
Good luck to the many people who will have this problem!
