Question about Toshiba Televison & Video
I got a 2nd hand Toshiba DVD player recently: it worked fine until 2 days ago when I fell off a stepladder, which landed on top of it! (BTW the DVD slides in and out of the front of the machine.) Now when I play a video the image starts OK, then darkens gradually to black, then goes back to being OK again. I've tried cleaning the lens and making sure all the switches still seem well attached. Any other ideas? Answers in very simple language appreciated. Thank you!

This kind of symptoms is an indication that the optical lens of your unit gone to tracking problems on the blu-ray disc that's why it loaded the disc for a long time and yet can't play it. This is not a DIY and can't be resolve even a disc cleaner kit because the optical lens needs to re-calibrate. Test instrument like oscilloscope and copy of the service manual is needed for this procedure.
Since you're unit is still under warranty period, avail it because the manufacturer will fix it for free. Don't attempt to open the top cover because it will void the warranty. You may contact Sony's eservice or your local service center to inquire where you can avail it.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

This is and usual indication of a poor spindel motor that needs replacing it is the motor that spins the disc, it is the most common failue in DVD's and CD plyrs. You can't just replace the motor you will have to replace what called the mech assembly which will include the spindle motor/Laser/stepping motor etc...
