My chipper has a 4 stroke motor - brand 168F (Chinese product), 198cc 6.5HP manual start, which is near new and has worked until recently. When I try to start the motor a backfire/pop occurs with no turn over. I have checked for stale petrol, oil levels, spark plug condition and gap, fuel lines and all seems fine.

I note your looking for the Super Tomahawk. If you can come up with a model number I think I can find your parts manual for sure. (or at least an on-line parts list.) Also.... If you can come up with an engine number like OH120 or L90 off of the engine I can find you a manual for the engine also.
Small engines like to see SAE30 oil. This is assuming a 4 stroke engine of course (if you have an oil filler spout and dip stick you have a 4 stroke engine). Use regular unleaded gas, and personally I mix STA-BIL into ALL of that gas I use with my small engines. I have too many carburetors to take the chance of needing to rebuild them in the spring. Manuals for MTD products are here: http://manuals.mtdproducts.com/mtd/public/list.jsp You will need model and serial numbers
