Question about Stihl Garden

Open Question

My stihl 019T seems to have to much compression when I pull the starter rope . .

I can force it by pulling hard, but the starter rope breaks often. Once you get it started you can usually restart it fairly easy. Is there a decompression valve on this model?

Has it always done this or has it developed?
Some saws have a decompression button to make it easier to pull over.

the problem is in the ignition coil.it needs to be replaced.it is under warranty.its warranty is life time.call husqvarna and they will either send you a new one or send you to a husqvarna dealer to fix the problem.that is at no cost to you..............let me know if this helped.................

SOURCE: Stihl 015 Chainsaw - Change Pull Start rope

You have 3 screws to take out. 1 by the trigger and 2 on the side cover ( one on top and 1 on bottom).
The first thing you want to do is remove spark plug. After plug is removed carefully separate the housing paying attention not to lose the little spring holding the trigger when it comes apart. You can do this with the bar/chain on, but easier to handle without it. After it comes apart you can remove spring clip holding flywheel on. Be careful to lift the flywheel straight up slowly making sure the coil spring does not come up with the flywheel. If you just move it back and forth a little while moving the flywheel off the shaft. Take the rope off and measure it. I think its about 18" but try to measure the one on there. Make sure you knot the rope leaving a small tail so when the knot is tightened it has a little room to move without coming undone.After you wind the rope (clockwise) leave about 1/2 '' of rope sticking up in the notch on side of reel . Slide the wheel down and make sure the bottom notch on wheel is going to engage the coil spring when the wheel is turned.Replace spring clip on the shaft. If you have a problem with the clip, you may not be down far enough with the wheel. Turn the wheel about 1 1/2 to 2 full turns putting tension on the spring and making sure the rope sticking up is close to the the hole you need to string it through to tie in the handle. After you feed the rope through the hole (making sure you are adding more pressure on the spring as you pull the rope out, enough rope to work comfortably with the handle I take a fat bladed screwdriver and stick it down in between the wheel and housing to stop it from unwinding. Then string it through the handle with the same kind of knot used for the flywheel. After your handle is secure you can remove the screw driver and see how it works before re-assembling. Putting the housing back together requires patience making sure the housing fits over the flywheel and trigger area goes together nice.

Tips: If you need aid in stringing the rope through the handle I take about 6" of electrical tape wrap it around the end of the rope about 5 times and make sure as you wind the tape is moving towards the end of the rope and you can have a tail off the end of the rope to send through the handle. If I understand what you are saying... The starter pulls smoothly with the starter cover removed or when installed and the plug removed (no compression or spark). If this is correct I think your saw's timing has slipped or maybe a defective decomp valve. Time to visit your neighborhood chainsaw seller/mechanic.HTH

SOURCE: hard to pull starter rope

Take the spark plug out--does it pull smoothly now? If not, the pull cord may be the wrong size or it is damaged and/or doesn't rewind correctly. Does the machine have a compression release? If so, it may be plugged with carbon. With the spark plug out, pull the engine through several times briskly with the throttle open and the choke off to expel any excess fuel from the crankcase. Hope some of this helps!

starter motor pinions come in different pitches ( number of teeth) to suit a variety of applications
ring gears on fly wheels burr or wear in set points so remove the starter and check for burrs on the teeth on the ring gear from your description it indicates that the ignition timing is too far advanced and the firing before correct time will pull the cord out of your hand
so from you statement of the starter motor and the rope pulling problem I would bee looking at an ignition timing problem way too far advanced ( 8-10 degrees max)

How do I cure kickback when starting a Stihl 044 chain saw , as soon as you pull the starter cord it snatches it out of your hand it really hurts.


pull rope just pass compression piston top dead center release rope let it rewind fully .then pull rope quick and firm.

Sounds like the engine decompressor is stuck shut remove it clean up with carb cleaner and try again.

problem could be failing ring/s or excessive fuel in the crankcase causing excessive combustion pressure or hydraulic lock
check by pulling the plug and if that eases the problem and the engine free spins from the rope , overhaul the carby with new needle and seat and diaphragms

Answer to 2 year old question about hard starting saw.There is a seal that goes bad and leaks chain oil into the crankcase.This will make it very hard or impossible to pull the starter rope. To start the saw,pull the spark plug, stand the saw on it's end so the bar is pointed up and pull the rope 10-15 times. Replace the spark plug and start.It will smoke for a while.To stop this from happening, always store the saw with the bar pointed straight down.

The rope on my generator gets stuck as i pull to turn it on


Assuming the rope stays on the internal pulley, it is NORMAL for the rope to require great force at points in the cranking cycle (once per revolution of the crankshaft). These are the compression strokes and the force is MANY times the initial pulling force. If the rope returns easily, then the starter assembly is probably normal. It takes a strong arm and fast movement to start the enginess via pull rope. Some units have a compression release to ease this a bit.

Stihl backpack blower starter rope is pulling harder and harder. When it dose pull it starts right up.


See if your rope pulley is opening up and allowing rope to double over on itself.When this happens the rope will wedge in pulley causing it to pull hard.
