I see only thin lines in my LCD display from the time it boots up. I removed the display from the hinges and removed the cover as well was the ribbon. Oncce it worked when I put the ribbon back. But, never again.

    Hi, Graphics card is good coz, this works with an external monitor. LCD display I doubt, coz, this did work once I connected the ribbon while everythign is disessembled. My computer is a Toshiba satellite A500. Ribon may have a short. That may be the case it only worked once and never again. I was wondering if you do know how to see is the invter or LCD working while we have the doubt on the ribon.

It is possible that the ribbon has a short in it. It is also possible the LCD screen has gone out. Or it could be the graphics chip.

I disagree. The procedure is so easy no Service Manual is needed

1) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter, and Battery.

2) Open the laptop.

The plastic frame in front of the LCD screen is the Display Bezel.
(Gateway? Believe they call it the LCD Panel Bezel)

Down in the BOTTOM corners, next to the Hinges, are screws to be removed. One in each bottom corner.

There are Screw Covers over these screws. The Screw Covers need to be removed.
Little round covers I believe to be made of plastic.
(Some models they are made of synthetic rubber)

I use a computer pick to Gently remove them.
Some use the tip of an X-Acto knife. I do not recommend this as there is a possibility of injury.
Perhaps a large darning needle. (Needle you sew with, but is Large in size)

Pick up at one edge of Screw Cover. Screw Covers are held on by a type of rubber cement.
I LIGHTLY stick them to the Display Bezel for safekeeping.

(Yes. They like to stick to the tool, your fingers, and it seems passing jets in the sky.
If you are careful with them, you should be able to reuse them.
If they do not stick anymore, use a toothpick, and apply a TINY dab of rubber cement to them/it )

Once the Screw Covers are removed use a No.1 Philips screwdriver, or equivalent Jewelers screwdriver; to remove the 2 screws.

The Display Bezel has TABS going around the exterior perimeter, of it's inside edges.
These Tabs snap into matching LATCHES on the Display Cover.

You can come from the Outside edge, where the Display Bezel meets the Display Cover, and use a thick guitar pick.

The guitar pick is wedged into the parting line, of where the Display Bezel meets the Display Cover.

Once a 'crack' is formed in-between the two, then the fingertips are used to gently start popping the bezel from the cover.

You slowly go along with your fingertips, and work along the top, then sides. By the time you have both sides almost loose, the Display Bezel usually pops off.

I like the flex method.
Come to the inside edge of the Display Bezel.
Where it meets the LCD screen. I suggest start on the Right side/Middle.

Use a fingertip, and lift up the inside edge of the Display Bezel up a little. Can't lift up at that spot? Move over. You are at a Tab/Latch.

With this spot lifted up a little, use the fingertip of the other hand, and slide under next to it.
Now use your fingertips as wedges, and pop the Display Bezel loose a little at a time.

I start at the Right side/Middle as stated. Left hand fingertips go DOWN the right side, Right hand fingertips go UP the right side.
Then I go across the Top, and down the Left side.

MOST of the time, as stated; the Display Bezel usually pops off when right side, and left side are most of the way popped loose.
NOT always though!

Sometimes you have to pop EACH and EVERY Tab/Latch loose.

Also; watch around the Hinge area/s.
Display Bezel can get hung up around them.
Go slow, and gently work the Display Bezel off, around the Hinge areas.

Display Bezel popped off, sit back; relax. You just did the hard part.
Wasn't so tough, huh?

The MAIN view shown is a BACK view.
In the smaller views underneath, the 4th view from the Left, shows the FRONT view.

If you SET your mouse cursor in the middle of the Main view photo, the Zoom In feature is enabled.
You can CLICK on any of the smaller views, to make them appear as a Main view.

You can also see that the Hinge Covers, are an integral part of the Display Bezel. Shows you that when removing the Display Bezel, these Hinge Covers may need to be worked off of the Hinges.

Of course, may not; as I have previously stated.

The LCD screen is an Assembly. It is composed of layers.
These layers are kept in the factory set alignment, by a metal Screen Frame.
The Screen Frame resembles a picture frame.

There are THREE screws on each side of the Screen Frame.
These screws (Philips) go through metal Brackets, and hold the LCD screen/Screen Frame; to the Display Cover.

The Brackets are an integral part of the Hinges,

On EACH side, there is 1 screw towards the Top, 1 screw towards the Bottom/Middle, and 1 screw towards the Bottom.

Remove all 6 screws.

At the Top is the Webcam Cable. Unplug it from the Webcam Module.
(Cable pulls to LEFT side, facing laptop)

The TOP of the LCD screen is now tilted forward.
The Video Cable plugs into the Bottom side.

There should be a piece of clear Mylar tape, holding the Video Cable connector in place. Carefully peel it back, unplug the Video Cable from the LCD screen.

Remove the LCD screen.

Reverse steps to install new LCD screen.

An LCD screen cannot produce light. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL or a series of LED lights, (For present technology)

The Toshiba Qosmio E15-AV101 uses a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.

Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.
(Usually 2mm Wide, by close to the height of the LCD screen, Long )

A screen Inverter is used to convert the power (Electricity) of the laptop, for the Backlight, and LCD screen.

90 PERCENT OF THE TIME the fault is the screen Inverter.

The front thin plastic frame in front of the LCD screen, is the Display Bezel.
Resembles a picture frame in it's design.

Toshiba's name is Display Mask.

The screen Inverter is located behind the Display Mask, and mounted at an area below the LCD screen.

A) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger) and Battery.

B) It would be best to buy, and wear an ESD wrist strap. Average cost is around $3 to $6. (Electro Static Discharge}
Connect it's alligator clip to a good ground source.

Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside a computer. The ESD wrist strap prevents that.

It is arguable that you are just replacing a screen Inverter, and the above is 'over-kill'.
I would rather spend $6, and not have to worry that I could accidentally make my laptop an expensive paperweight, or doorstop.

Use a multi-compartment container for the various screws you will remove. SOME screws look VERY similar to other screws.

DO NOT mix them up.

C) Open the laptop, lay the Display Assembly all the way back. (Down)
Pull up on the right Hinge Cover, and remove it. Do the same for the left Hinge Cover.

To the immediate right of the right Hinge Cover, and immediate left of the left Hinge Cover, are two Philips head screws to remove.
These screw heads are covered by a piece of masking tape.

The tape is carefully removed, (May be able to use it again), and the two screws removed.

The Display Mask is very thin, therefore quite flexible.
The mask has plastic tabs that protrude from the outside edges.
There are matching tabs on the Display Cover.

(Display Cover: Plastic top cover of the laptop. Covers the LCD screen)

The Display Mask tabs snap into the Display Cover.

Go to either the Left side, or Right side of the Display Mask.
Go to the inside middle edge.
Halfway between the top and bottom of the Display Mask, and to the inside edge against the LCD screen.

Use a soft cloth laid on the LCD screen to protect it, and use a finger to gently start lifting on the middle/inside edge of the Display Mask.
(Cloth is to protect LCD screen from your fingernail)

With the Display Mask lifted in the middle, the width of a fingertip, ease another finger beside it. Start moving away from the first finger, and lifting up on the Display Mask.

The tabs of the Display Mask will start 'popping' out of the Display Cover.
Go around to the top of the Display Mask, and head towards the opposite side.

Once the Display Mask is halfway popped loose, the rest of the mask should come free.
Note that you have to slide the mask over to the Left, to clear the Latch, when removing the mask.

You will now see the screen Inverter,mounted to an area at the bottom of the LCD screen.

Unplug the cables from the Left, and Right side of the screen Inverter.
Note that the connectors on the cables are different, and can't be mixed up, as to where they plug in.

Remove the single Philips head screw from the bottom/middle of the screen Inverter.

Test the screen Inverter before removing;
This requires a sensitive (Read fairly expensive) multimeter,

Replacing is a procedure that is fairly intensive, even for an experienced tech.

Why?
The LCD screen (Toshiba = LCD Module) is composed of many layers.
These layers are set in a specific pattern by the factory.

The layers are held in place by a Screen Frame. A thin metal frame that resembles a picture frame. (Toshiba = P-Chassis )

Part of the screen frame is removed. The screen frame Bezel.
(P-Chassis Bezel)

[ The P-Chassis, or screen frame, is composed of TWO parts. The lower main half which is the P-Chassis, and a thin upper half which is the screen frame Bezel, or P-Chassis Bezel.

This will all make more sense when you view it in the Service Manual, on Page 281 ]

Anti-Static computer gloves are usually worn to prevent soiling the LCD Panel, (LCD screen)
(Soiling = Oil from your fingers, dirt, and also helps prevent scratching the LCD screen )

There is a panel, or Board, that goes across the top. Three screws are removed. Then open the bent portion of the TCP of the board, and remove the Backlight.

The Display Assembly needs to be removed from the laptop, in order to perform replacing the Backlight lamp. (Bulb)

Screen not displaying anything. BUt the machine is on.


1.Diagnose the problem with your computer. Watch the screen from the moment you hit the power button through the time it should take to boot into the Operating System. Adjust the computer's contrast and brightness through their full ranges to make sure that the display settings have not been changed. Reset the computer's LCD-External Monitor display with the LCD/External Monitor key combination and reboot the computer. Continue to Step 2 if the screen is blank throughout the booting process.
2.Adjust the screen from its fully closed position to its fully opened position. Watch the monitor for any change from a blank screen to a display or vice-versa. If the screen flashes or cuts out, the LCD panel will need to be replaced. Skip to Step 5.
3.Skip this step if your computer does not have an external monitor output. Connect your computer's external monitor output to a known good monitor and change the display from LCD to External Monitor (the keystroke combination is different for all notebook brands). Reboot the comptuer, if necessary. If the computer does not display to the external monitor, the video card could be bad. Skip to Step 6.

When dell d810 computer is powered on many colored vertical lines appear on display booting is stopped


If this happens after a few initial screens go by with no issue and then windows starts loading and it hangs then it's a software problem.

If the lines appear right away and you never see any software loading then it's a hardware issue.

It could be an issue with the video card, mainboard, LCD, or the wires that go from the mainboard up to the LCD screen. The odd part is that a video issue shouldn't stop it from booting, so that points more towards a mainboard issue.

Are you sure it's not booting? Maybe just the display is out.
Watch the disk drive light and see if it continues flickering for a few minutes after the video goes, out.

Did you have an trouble with the hinges on this laptop? Just asking because the display wires are tiny and fragile and they travel up to the LCD passing near the hinge area.

If you are brave and reasonably handy and can read a detailed service manual you could try reseating some of the internal connectors but that gets pretty involved and the problem is more likely with the LCD itself or the mainboard.

There is a lot of info about this on the Dell communities that covers many models and some of them mention known problems that Dell fixes for free. See the link below, then call Dell. Be polite but firm and mention the recall because it seems to cover the D810 so they may fix it for free.

White screen or some times white vertical lines at start up


I had similar problem. Sometimes the screen goes white while working under windows and repositioning the display, but most of the time it goes white during power up. I decided to check the display cabling by removing the speaker/power-button panel and display coverings. Although I couldn't find a loose cable, the display was consistently working properly. I put it back together and so far so good.
To expose the wiring:
1. Power off, unplug power cord, and remove battery.
2. Open display all the way flat with the keyboard.
3. The speaker/power-button panel is also the cover for the display hinges. You can pry the panel off by prying up the hinge covers from the sides facing center.
4. The inside display covering is fasten with four screws in the corners covered by the rubber bumpers.
5. The outer display shell is attached by 6 screws. 2 on each hinge and 1 on either side of the LCD unit.
6. The mic and camera cables can be unpluged by gentle prying the plugs out.

I was playing online games on my sony vaio. Suddenly I got blue lines on the screen and the laptop stopped responding. So I tried restarting the laptop but I get blue thin vertical lines before the laptop...


Blue thin lines before it boots will rule out an operating system or driver fault. So it would appear something in the machine has failed.
Do you have a VGA monitor you can connect to it and see whether it shows the fault? This will show that if the fault also shows on the external monitor, it is likely an electronic fault on the main board, whereas if it works on the external monitor but not on the built-in monitor, my guess would be the cable that goes from the main board up through the hinge of the screen into it, or a connector, or an actual fault with the LCD display.
Windows booting normally once the display drivers were disabled indicates to me that Windows is no longer detecting the faulty display and therefore boots normally - possibly pointing to failed electronics in some way. It could even be corrupt BIOS that controls the video or something along these lines, though that's unlikely.
Good luck, either way it sounds like it's off to a computer repair shop. Is it under warranty?
