I have a Dell Inspiron 6400. I charge it 100%, but it does not give more 15 to 20 minutes backup.

You can try the hardware diagnostics test to detect any failures in hardware.

May be the battery life has been reduced due to overcharging so replacing the battery will solve the problem or try to run the laptop in minimal mode setings (display).

The best and cheapest solution is probably for you to purchase one of the aftermarket batteries you have been researching. While they may be physically compatible, original Dell components are often designed to identify themselves, and they tend to resist being mixed-and-matched. Aftermarket manufacturers have developed strategies to avoid the authentication process.
Before you give up, though, be sure to try this trick: simultaneously press Fn and either F2 or F3 (which ever one has the battery icon printed on it). If you've unwittingly pressed this combination, you may have disabled the charging process. Try it with BOTH batteries--the battery that originally shipped with the Inspiron 6400 may not be dead after all!

Dell inspiron 6400,replacement battery is not recognised when installed

The system may need up to 24 hours to charge the battery if it arrived in a totally discharged state. It may look like nothing is happening, but give it time.

How do I know if my dell laptop Inspiron 6400 battery is dead? Presently if I unplug the AC cord the laptop powers off..

The battery has a digital meter on it.
(The row of LED lights).
Press the test button on the end of the row. How many LED's show up?

The power adapter may not be powerful enough to charge the battery AND operate the laptop.
Is the power adapter a "Dell" brand or a Kenninsington or other third-party adapter?
If not a Dell brand adapter, tyhen it can't charge the battery. get a Dell adapter (or borrow one to make sure).

Try looking it up in the power options menu in the control panel. There must be some battery settings you can check.

DELL LAPTOP INSPIRON 6400 MY LAPTOP BATTERY IS SHOWING STATUS ( UNKNOWN ) ON WINDOWS & ON BIOS IT SAYSS BATTERY NOT INSTALLED

Here are my recommendations for this issue:

1. Reseat the battery.
2. Remove All External Components
3. Check the battery connectors on the battery and the system. Examine the connector on the battery and the system. Make sure that there is no physical damage and that it is clear of debris.
4. Remove All External Components
5. Try a known-good battery in the system, if available.

Dell inspiron 6400 Battery problem

what i would suggest is to check the bios there may be a new flash download on the dell website, my wife has a inspiron 1525, which is plugged in and says not charging, the battery will not go above 0%, but we have had to send it to dell (still under warranty) faulty motherboard. if the bios is up to date, there could be a hardware issue with the battery or motherboard

New battery not charging

It is normal for a battery to degrade after a year since its a consumable part. It's just like any ordinary rechargeable battery. We have 2 points of failure that might be causing the problem. First the battery itself. Second the Charge board that charges and detects the battery. Given that the NON-DELL battery is working on other dell Computer, it simply tells us that it is the charge board that needs to be replaced wich is integrated to the motherboard. If your warranty is still active, call dell and tell them that you've tried a Known good battery and its still not charging. However, you might also consider that dell computers are designed for dell batteries. the charge board might have problems charging the third party battery since its not configured to do so.

hope this helps.
