If the program is Avast, install Microsoft Security Essentials and then it will try to uninstall it automatically.
If you have tried to uninstall it from it's folder usually in Start menu or in the C disk in it's folder, then try using the Control Panel.

Never install more than one anti-virus in your computer. they conflict and cause problems.
Look at all the icons on the bottom left of the task bar near the time.
move your mouse over it and it will tell you what it is. If you ahve two anti-virus running you will see two icons for different types of anti-virus.
you can also go to the control panel and click on add and remove programs, select non-windows programs and it will show you the list of softwares installed on your computer. Check everyone to see if it is a anti-virus. you can google any of them if you are not sure what they are.
common anti-viruses are norton, mcafee, avg
you can install them together but not multiple types of each one.
