Start with a visual inspection of all the outer fabric, straps and clasps, ensure there are no chaffs or tears and that all stitching is intact.

Open the jacket up and fold out the plastic inner bladder. Do the same visual inspection. Check that your gas cylinder is tightly screwed in, these can work loose.Check the gas bottle for corrosion too, if it's rusty replace it.

Remove the cylinder and check the operating head. Test the operation by pulling the lanyard and checking that the firing pin travels forward and returns freely and the pin is not worn or bent. Take care with the plastic safety clip, which is designed to break when operated, and may need to be replaced.

If it has a hydrostatic trigger fitted check that it is showing green and not red...if it's red replace the trigger system.

Inflate your life jacket using a hand pump, if you use your mouth it will lead to a build up of moisture in the jacket which is best avoided. Leave it inflated for 24hrs to see if there are any leaks. Remember to take into account changes in temperature will affect the air pressure in the jacket, don't confuse this with leaks.

In the UK the RNLI run free life jacket clinics periodically. They are more than happy to look at your jackets.

You should remember that the materials that life jackets are made out of are synthetic and nylon and can be harmed over time by sun radiation. So you must keep them in the shadow, and even better in a room or a garage. Also you should keep them in a dry place since water can also damage your life jackets over time.

How do I know that the life jacket fits?

First, make sure that you are trying a lifejacket that fits your weight and height. The best way to test it is to work in a pair. Hold your hands straight above your head and have someone else pull up the tops of the arm openings. If the jacket covers your face or chin, it is too large.

Can children wear adults life jacket?

No. It is very important that life jackets will properly fit the person that wears it. Life Jacket first and main purpose is to keep your head and shoulder above water. If the jacket is loose the floatation will push the jacket around the face and if it's too small it will not float.

Are there any life jacket rules? Do I have to have jackets on my boat?

As US coast guard website specifically mentions: All recreational boats must carry one wearable lifejacket (Type I, II, III or Type V lifejacket) for each person aboard. A Type V lifejacket provides performance of either a Type I, II, or III lifejacket (as marked on its label) and must be used according to the label requirements. Any boat 16ft and longer (except canoes and kayaks) must also carry one throwable lifejacket (Type IV lifejacket). What type of life jackets are there?

There are 5 types of life Jackets and they differ from one another in performance and equipment attached to them. Type 4 is not a life jacket but a throwable device like a wheel. Remember - the lower the number, the better the performance. Hence, Type I is better than Type II

Broken zipper pull on snowboarding jacket

Put the zipper back on its tracks....use some staples (appr.3) and push them into where the old stopper was making as many tight circles as you can .use small needle-nose pliers. after this simply sew over top of the staples with strong thread or fishing line. It's a bit red necked ...but it works.
