In the past few years more and more states in the U.S. as well as all of Canada have adopted a "Pleasure Craft Licence" policy. If you operate any vessel (including sailboats) equipped with a motor/engine, you MUST have this license (or similar proof of competency) aboard at all times. I've included a link to the State of New York website as well as Transport Canada's website.

Hope this helps.

You do not need a license to sail your Yacht. However, if it is not yours and you are renting it, you may need a sailing license or some sort of certificate that proofs that you are capable of sailing the boat.

Also keep in mind that this may differ from country to country so you may want to double check.

In some countries like Greece to charter a sailing yacht it is "necessary" for one crewmember (skipper) to have sailing certificates proving his competence. In any case, one certificate/license or competence resume should be available. This certificate can be any kind of "paper" issued by a "yachting" authority such as sailing clubs, sailing schools, yachting/sailing associations, established charter companies, etc.

Due to the reason that in many countries no certificates are compulsory you may follow the following instratctions at http://www.aegeanwind.gr/faqs-2/85-do-i-need-a-sailing-license-to-charter-a-bareboat-sailing-yacht-in-greece

I hope it helps.

You will need a icc certificate as a minimum, you could get this in just 4 days as long as you have some idea of what your doing, you could get this through a yacht charter company

Up to around 50 feet, no. If the boat is capable of a 50 ton carrying capacity, or if you plan on carrying paying passengers, then yes.

Is it a good investment to buy a yacht?

Investment to buy Yacht is a very outdated it is very costly and requires maintenance and security. Value of yacht keeps decreasing. It's a black hole which keeps taking money until you get poor and does not give any return. Yacht investment is very risky. You can't sell it if you want your money back!

You should better invest in healthcare startups which are the future. They will give you faster and sure returns in around 4 to 10 years. Their is much less risk in investing in companies which have patents and clinical studies. Contact Kavas Yachting Charters in Greece with details like how much money you have so that you i can recommend you investment opportunities which are profitable to invest with good returns.

First, you must know that getting a skipper license isn't easy since it requires responsibility not only for the vassel itself but also for the people and crew aboard. It takes a long time and some bureaucracy to get this license. For more details: http://skippercourse.com/skipper-license-usa and http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/cb_capt.asp

How many people can fit in a 20 feet yacht?

I'm sorry but I totally disagree with the other answers... a waft yacht is pretty small & would never advise more than 4 people for any period of time, on the other hand if you are just going on a jolly for a few hours then possibly 6 people, 20ft yacht is a small vessel and you will not be able to move around on the thing with more than 6!
