I got that same message and, in desperation, read the manual. It turns out I had skipped the last step in installing the ink cartridge: "Push up on the cartridge until it clicks into place". When I opened the printer back up and pushed the cartridges up, they did indeed click into place, and the error went away.

Error u053

Hello,
this error signals that something is wrong with ink cartridge.
You can try re-install ink cartidge, if this doesn't helps ink cartridge is defective and you need to replace with new one.

Hope that helps!

I just replaced both ink cartridges and the alarm light is now on. The LCD screen reads check ink, U053, BLK COL. I can't get the printer to work or perform any functions.

On the canon MX300, holding the "reset" button down for about 10 seconds will extinguish the alarm light & should normalize all functions. The ink level will still indicate "low" , just ignore it.
