Question about RTO Cutler-hammergd3100 100amp 3pole Circuit Breaker

3-pole 60 Amp Circuit Breaker is tripped and won't reset.

This breaker powers two deep fryers in a commercial kitchen. The breaker tripped during a power outage. I cannot reset the breaker to normal position.

Check ot see if its on a shunt trip system. what it means is that in order to reset the breaker you have to see what made it trip. Look for a 115 volt breaker that is tripped in the panel that serves tha line. good luck.

When this breaker tripped, it did not go fully to off. Push the breaker all the way off and then all the way to on. It should be fine. If not manually push it to full off once again and then back on. If both attempts fail the breaker will have to be replaced. good luck.

The larger the circuit breaker is and the more poles (1, 2 or 3) that are being opened / closed; the more force it will require to operate - both by hand or when tripping. Compare the tension or force you need to apply to a similar sized circuit breaker at Home Depot, etc.

The troubling issue about this for me is the fact that the 200 amp service disconnect / main is tripping. This is an indication of an overloaded panel / circuit. I usually see individual circuits that trip in a panel - but often find the that main breaker has only 20% - 60% of its rating on it at any given time. If you're tripping a 200 amp service disconnect / main breaker repeatedly - something has got to give - and eventually the circuit breaker will fail. That may be where you are now with this breaker. You may be in need of a service upgrade (if it is the service disconnect) as clearly, you have out grown the 200 amp size one you currently have or need add a new sub-panel to ease the load that this 200 amp main is trying to supply now.

Either way, you should call a reputable electrical contractor to have your service / sub-panel evaluated very soon. Good luck!

Need information on circuit breaker BR2100 60amp

A BR2100 circuit breaker is a 2 Pole 100 Amp (for the part number "BR2100", the "2" indicates the number of poles and the "100" indicates the amperage) circuit breaker. It can be installed in a single phase or three phase 120/240 VAC system panel that specifically lists the BR series breakers as acceptable for use.

A BR260 A BR2100 circuit breaker is a 2 Pole 60 Amp (the part number BR260, the "2" indicates the number of poles and the "60" indicates the amperage) circuit breaker. It can be installed in a single phase or three phase 120/240 VAC system panel that specifically lists the BR series breakers as acceptable for use.

It is not possible to have a BR2100 rated for 60 amps, 1 or 3 poles, or a BR260 rated for 100 amps, 1 or 3 poles.

It is not permissible to install any circuit breaker brand or type in any panel that does not specifically include it on a list of acceptable circuit breakers.

Circuit breakers are designed to carry 80% of the amperage rating.
To determine the load a circuit breaker can carry, multiply the circuit breaker amp rating by 80%.
This means that if you need to supply more than 80 amps, you cannot use a 100 amp circuit breaker. A higher rating is required. A BR2110 would be acceptable for loads greater than 80 amps, but less than 88 amps because the formula above says: 110 amp x 80% = 88 amps.

To determine the breaker size, determine the load (by measuring with a meter or obtaining amp rating of the load from the data plate) and multiply it by 125%. Using the same numbers in the example above; assume an 88 amp load. 88 amps x 125% = 110 amp circuit breaker. The 60 amp breaker is acceptable for up to 48 amps because 60amps x 80% = 48 amps. A 48 amp load needs a 60 amp breaker because 48 amps x 125% = 60 amps.

Can i make a 40 amp circuit breaker with two 20 amp breakers?


Yes. A two-pole breaker is just two breakers hooked together. But the very important part is that if one pole trips THEY MUST BOTH TRIP. If only one trips, then the circuit won't operate the appliance (whatever it is) but one of the poles will still be live!

My Sylvania - ground fault 15 amp breaker (32740) is tripping with minutes of reseting. It is for 3 washrooms & hallway & is 30 years old .....does or can it loose its life span? What is the cost...


A circuit breaker can go bad, but usually not in the way that you describe. That's not to say that it can't happen, but just not typical. GTE Sylvania breakers were once popular - I installed quite a few GTE / Sylvania electrical panels in homes in the late 80's. You may have trouble finding replacements; do not put an breaker that "fits" into the panel, unless the breaker is designed for use in the panel you have.

The first thing to do is determine the source of the problem. The breaker will trip, but not indicate if it was the result of a heavy electrical load or a ground fault condition. A 15 amp circuit breaker is designed to carry up to 12 amps continuously. The greater the load, the more quickly it will trip. it may carry a 14.5 amp load for several minutes to an hour before tripping, and a 20 amp load may be carried a second or two. GFI breakers are designed to carry 5 thousandths (.005) of an amp (or 5 milliamps) to ground, or the 12+ amps to neutral before they trip.

The way I would attack the problem is to install a new GFI outlet in front of the old wiring, by "inserting it" between the panel and the other plugs and lights, switches, etc on that circuit. The GFI outlet will provide the same GFI protection that the circuit breaker provided at a fraction of the cost.

Turn off the old GFI breaker, and remove it completely. Install a new, standard (non-GFI) single pole 15 amp circuit breaker in its place. Completely remove from the panel the cable that the old GFI breaker fed. Buy a new electrical outlet box (surface or flush mount as desired) that is large enough and deep enough for a GFI plug and 2 cables (if surface mount, use a 4" square deep box and appropriate cover - or if flush mounting use a deep plastic / fiber single gang box). It will be installed in a place close to the panel, but where the old cable will be able to reach inside. Bring the old cable removed from the panel into the new box. Run a new cable that has the same number and size wires from the panel into the new box, too. Connect the circuit neutral and circuit ground to the neutral and ground bars in the panel (they are probably the same bar) and the hot wire to the circuit breaker. make sure that the circuit breaker is OFF. Twist the two ground wires together and combine an 8 inch length of bare or green insulated wire with them in a wirenut.

Next, wire a new GFI plug in the new box. Connect the green wire from the wirenut to the green terminal of the GFI outlet.

Connect the plug's LINE terminals to the neutral and hot wires in the cable that you ran from the panel to the outlet box.

Now, connect the GFI plug's LOAD terminals to the neutral and hot wires in the cable that you removed from the panel and reinstalled into the new outlet box.

Secure the GFI outlet into the box and install the cover. Cover the electrical panel.

Power up and test. if the GFI trips, there's a ground fault in the circuit. If the circuit breaker trips, the circuit is overloaded.

How to reset Cutler Hammer 1 pole 15 Amp


Turn handle to off position and then back on. Same as any other breaker. The red test button can be pressed which will trip breaker. If it trips immediately,unplug all devices on circuit and try to reset. Reconnect each device and see which trips breaker. If this goes to outdoor receptacle, check behind cover for moisture.

20amp breaker tripped unexpectly tonight. tried resetting at panel but won't click all the way over and little red indicator also on the breaker


Hello, In order to reset circuit breakers that have tripped under load, you must first flip the breaker all the way OFF, before you can then turn the breaker back ON. This should reset the breaker to turn the power back on to the circuit supplied by this breaker.

The red indicator is just there to make it easier to find the tripped breaker. Typically, the red indicator flag is a special feature of Square D QD breakers and panels.

If the breaker immediately trips again and doesn't stay on, then the device it is providing power to, still has a fault and it needs to be looked at to determine what is causing the fault and the tripping of the breaker.

Be sure to turn the breaker OFF if you are going to check the device for potential problems.

I have a 15 amp single pole circuit breaker that


It could be either or at this point. First thing to do, is unplug all electric devices from the plugs on that circuit, and then attempt to reset the breaker. If it does not trip, one of the devices plugged into a receptacle on that circuit could have a short. If it doesn't trip, plug each device in one at a time to see it it trips the breaker to pin point what is causing the short. If the above has no effect, I recommend replacing the breaker. It is easy and inexpensive to do. Just make sure you main is shut off before doing any work on the panel. I hope this helps and good luck!
