Can I make gluten free bread in the TR845?

Yes. Almost any bread machine can make a gluten free bread.
The key is to select teh correct settings to allow it to rise dequately but not too much.

I am trying to make whole wheat bread with setting number 4, it is not kneading, just sitting there. I can detect some heat inside.

What you are describing is normal. Whole wheat settings on most machines heat up first before the kneading begins.

I received my breadmaker Christmas 2009. I have always used the basic setting but decided to make wheat bread. The recipe calls for a different setting. After I plugged it in, nothing happened; for...

Yes, many machines warm up a little when you choose the wheat setting, also if your manual shows the cycle times for the various programs you will probably notice a different Knead time (more) vs. the basic program and that is because whole wheat flour lacks enough gluten to make a nice, large, soft loaf, so to compensate it has a longer knead. Even with that though your whole wheat loaves are probably going to be shorter than a 100 whole wheat loaf.
Many bakers ( me included) add purchased wheat gluten and add that to the flour, (be sure to remove and equal amount of w. wheat flour from the recipe if you do this) to get a softer, higher, better texture loaf.

Just purchased the Panasonic Breadmaker SD-YD250 and wonder if the 'Rest Period' portion can be programed out or deleted. Many thanks Richard

That is usually part of the whole wheat program. I don't know if you can program it out or not but you could compare the program with the "basic" program and try using that instead if you think it might work. To have a decent loaf you may have to replace some of your whole wheat flour with bread flour and perhaps some vital wheat gluten and experiment to see if you get a good loaf. Many bread makers have the rest period to start their whole wheat program.

My machine was unplugged for no more than 3 seconds during kneading. it is quiet now and on ALERT. on a 5 hour whole wheat xl loaf..now at 3:02. how do i restart it and move it off of alert

If you feel your dough has kneaded and risen enough, try pushing the stop button until it beeps. Then unplug and replug and select the bake stage and using the timer feature put enough time on the bake cycle to equal the bake time of your original whole wheat bake stage. That time should be on your page in the manual that shows the length of all the programs.

We just bought the same one with two paddles, we waited about 15 minutes and it didn't start kneading... is it defective, should i send it back?

If you chose the "whole wheat program" it may have a delay cycle. Many whole wheat programs on bread machines Try turning it on with no ingredients in it. You won't hurt the machine doing this. If it hasn't started kneading within 30 minutes then it is definitely broken. For example one of my madhines is a Toastmaster brand. If I choose the whole wheat program it slowly preheats for 20 minutes before any kneading begins.

When i make whole wheat bread, the loaf comes out dense and short. I added gluten and about 1/8 cp more water. Still a problem.

My bread machine recommends stopping the machine about ten minutes in, and re-starting. The extra kneading/mixing is supposed to help. I've been doing that, and never have a problem with whole wheat bread.

BREAD OVERBAKES

Take a look at your manual. There are a couple pages with charts showing the kneading and bake times for the machine. Try setting a cycle for a smaller loaf. I have a similar problem and had been setting a timer to take my loaf out early.

TR440 Breadman won't begin kneading once "start" button is pushed

Hi Mindy.......it takes 30 minutes to PREHEAT this silly machine for wheat bread. I thought I did something wrong, too........I stopped it twice after it preheated for about 15 minutes. I did not want to waste anything so I let it stay in the machine.....I just went to check the machine and it started after 30 minutes of preheating.

I wish they would mention this in the book!!!
