Motherboard Compaq p58b40 type of memory

do you have any more info about this m/b Bernard ? such as what model of computer it came from name/number eg Presario S1930nr ? can you provide a picture of the m/b ? Does it have the hp/Compaq p/n on it either on the board above the white slots (?) or possibly on stickon label ?
I reckon it's this on the basis of what I have been able to find out, with no further input from you
"midi p58b40, supports compaq pentium 4/512/533, micro-ATX, socket 478 1. 0 mb DDR400 SDRAM, vga, pci, usb ports 9 2 0 1 RJ45 two IDE ATA100 / 1 dpf 1 RS232 / 1 parallel". I think it will support up to 2 x 1 GB DRR1-400 RAM

HP are good at making info difficult to find, removing it, and failing to harmonise p/ns and descriptions - m/b have three or more identifiers

Jumper setting vor motherboard setting in computer

AsRock Support > P4i65G > Main Support page,

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/P4i65G/

In the top left column under the green AsRock name, click on - Manual in the list.

To the right of - User Manual - click on the country NAME nearest yours.

When the PDF file comes up........
Hover your mouse cursor at the bottom. The ghosted out navigation guide will appear.
Go to the far right, and click on the Adobe PDF icon.
(When you hover your mouse cursor over it, "Show Adobe Reader toolbar" will briefly appear)

Click on the Zoom Out icon ( - ) at the top, to Decrease the view size.
Use the Zoom In icon ( + ) to Increase the view size.

The Adobe Reader page number box, is to the right of the Down Arrow, at top.

Page 9 shows a Motherboard Layout, and the jumper locations.
Page 15 has the details about the jumper settings.

Motherboard installed in computer case;

A) At the Top/Left corner is PS2/USB/PWR1 jumper
There are 3 pins.
Starting on the LEFT side going towards the Right;
Pins 1, 2, and 3.

Jumper cap on Pins 2 and 3 for +5VSB
+5 Volt StandBy power.

It is for PS/2 or USB Wake-Up events.
Suggest leave on Pins 1 and 2.

B) To the Top/Left corner of the top white PCI slot, is the JR1JL1 jumper.
4 pins going across.

From the LEFT side going towards the Right;
Pin 1 and Pin 2 for JR1.
The next two pins are Pin 1 and Pin 2 for JL1.

If there is a jumper cap on those pins, your Front Panel audio ports, and Rear panel audio ports will not work.

(JL1 = Front Panel JR1 = Rear panel. The rear panel is also the I/O area. Input/Output. Where the mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc hook up)

C) Right below the round CMOS battery on the right side, is the
CLRCMOS0 jumper.
Clear CMOS jumper

NO jumper cap on those 2 pins to operate the motherboard.

"CLRCMOS0 allows you to clear the data in CMOS. The data in CMOS includes system setup information such as system password, date, time, and system setup parameters.

To clear and reset the system parameters to default setup, please turn off the computer and unplug the power cord from power supply.
After waiting for 15 seconds, use a jumper cap to short two pins on CLRCMOS0 for 5 seconds."

How can recover a flashed/deleted/upgrade failed bios

Download the latest BIOS update from your computer manufacturer's website onto a USB flash drive. Refer to your user manual to obtain the manufacturer's website address.

If the downloaded BIOS file is a zip archive, unzip the contents onto your USB flash drive.

Jumper settings may need to be reconfigured on some motherboards to enter BIOS recovery mode. Most Intel-based motherboards have a jumper setting or switch near the on-board

CMOS battery.

The procedure for setting the jumpers will vary depending on your motherboard make and model, so refer to the motherboard documentation for specific instructions.

Power on the computer and press "F2" to access the Setup Mode menu.

If you are unable to access the setup menu, you will not be able to proceed with this repair. Take your computer to a repair shop, as the motherboard may need to be replaced.

Use the arrow key to select "Boot Priority" or a similarly named field. Press the "Enter" key.

Scroll down until "First boot priority" or "First boot drive" is selected and press "Enter."

Select the USB flash drive as the first boot priority device. Press the "F10" key to save this setting and exit from the setup menu.

Connect the USB flash drive to an open USB port on your computer.

Then let your computer fully reboot.

The USB flash drive should be detected and the BIOS should update automatically.

When the update is complete, you may be prompted to restart your computer, or it may reboot automatically.

If you are able to use your computer without any further problems of overheating or failure to recognize drives, your failed BIOS update has been resolved.

hope this helps

I have an Intel D845GVSR motherboard. The 4 back USB ports are enabled but the two front ports aren't. I also have a Creative Combo NS DVD ROM with card readers in it. My Computer guy enabled the card...

This is probably set in the BIOS. You need to reboot the computer and enter the Setup/BIOS to enable the ports. Otherwise they're physically disconnected in the case and you will need and expert to reconnect.

Hello! my problem is that my two USB ports is blown. Now I want to connect more USB port on the motherboard via cable, but none matches the port that the USB or sb_link, jp1... Can you tell me which port...

You will need to get a usb expansion card. These can be found at Best Buy, Newegg.com, tigerdirect.com, pc-connection.com etc...

Some manufactures ship with newer motherboards a usb expansion slot using the motherboard jumper configuration but your motherboard must first be able to support this type of expansion.

I recommend the pci usb expansion. They plug into your PCI slot and give you 2-4 extra USB slots in the back of your computer.

As far as the cd drive goes, get that replaced cause with the door closing and shuttin on its on, it could broken pieces of debris in there thats causing it to do that or the board inside of the cd drive is broken so either way replacing that would solve that issue.

As far as the USB ports are concerned, try hooking up other USB devices such as a USB keyboard, USB Mouse, flashdrive. Try other things to see if you get the same thing, if you do then that means the motherboard is bad cause all of those ports connect to the motherboard.

As an alternative solution to try, if you don't have anything important to save off of the hard drive, you can restore your computer back to factory defaults and then try the usb ports again and if they still dont' work then you know for sure the motherboard is bad. At that point you can replace the motherboard or find a USB card that plugs into one of the PCI slots. That would give you other usb ports to try.

PS 2 port problem

What is the model number of your motherboard? VIA does not make Processor's/CPU's.
VIA makes chipset's for motherboards.
In order to answer your question I'll need the manual for the motherboard. No manual listed here: http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/mainboards/others/p4xb_m.jsp

Here is a picture of the VIA P4XB-M motherboard. This model can not use DDR2 memory. (Only, 184pin PC2100 DDR266 DIMM)
Found here: http://www.upgradecomputermemory.com/ram.cfm//memory/V/VIA-Technologies/P4XB-M-Motherboard/256MB-VIA-Technologies-Desktop-184pin-PC2100-DDR266-DIMM.html

VIA P4XB-M
http://www.via.com.tw/download/mainboards/4/11/P4XB-M.pdf

99.0% of motherboards still use PS2 ports. One colored purple for the PS2 keyboard female port, back side of the MB & the other colored light green, female port, back side of the MB PS2 mouse port. By default, most motherboards have the jumper for PS2 keyboard enabled. Location for this two-pin jumper varies from board to board.
A USB port looks like this:
http://www.rickysays.com/images/usb-port.jpg
The PS2 port's are found in the upper left hand corner of this same picture. This next link will show how to connect USB motherboard jumpers including their wire locations. (Standard for most motherboard USB connections).

USB ports not working

Bro, go to the website of your motherboard manufacturer and download a screen shot of it then open your users manual and go to the motherboard overview. Observe the way all the jumpers has been connected and connect back all the jumpers that you have relocated to the way it is connected on the screen shot. ( by the way, disconnect the power cord before you do all of this ok?) Reboot your computer and check the USB detection on the Device manager. If it's detected then good but if not, uninstall it then reinstall it. I hope i was of help ! Good Day !!!
